This is the Play OG 1.6.0 & Play+ 1.2.0 release. It merges the MIDI performance and Finger Drumming features and includes crucial bug fixes. It includes additional fixes added after the beta #3 firmware updates. It is a recommened update for anyone using beta or non-beta firmware.
Quick question:
In fingerdrumming mode, can the pads be triggered by an external device? This is specifically a question about the Play, not the Play+.
Thanks Mitch, I just tested both, works nicely for me.
Minor things:
The manuals seem to have been re-uploaded to reflect the 1.2 version, but I don’t think they were actually updated. Neither the “Play+ Essentials” nor the “Play+ Manual” PDF files mention the finger drumming mode.
Furthermore, “Play+ Essentials” says: “When perform mode is used in either the Audio track page or the MIDI / Synth page, the Delay, Reverb, and Loop will be applied to audio tracks.” – that doesn’t seem to be the case (thankfully), I can hear these effects affecting both audio and MIDI tracks.
Finally “Play+ Manual” says “Perform mode is only available for Audio tracks and is not available in MIDI Mode.” which is no longer the case now, thanks to this update
Unrelated, but I might as well ask, and forgive me for the dumb question, but why is Panning not something available for the synths on the Play+? I really like separating instruments that way.
Sorry, I misspoke (and updated my original question accordingly). I meant for the synths on the Play+. Since the audio is generated on the device itself, why can’t we pan synths?
@Mitch I’m not sure if this is a bug or feature, but I’m lost/curious with respect to the design choice here. Why am I losing my Perform FX when switching from the Audio side to the MIDI side?
It is super fun to play with Perform FX, and even more now that I can do it from the Synth side, but my song is divided between the two sides. I’m selecting some tracks on the Audio side, applying some Perform FX, it’s all greatut now I want to do something similar to some tracks on the MIDI side, without losing the FX on the Audio side.
As I switch from one side to the other (while still in Perform FX mode), the selected FX are kept (still highlighted) BUT the selected tracks are lost. In other words, each time I switch from one side to the other, I lose the FX on the other side abruptly (the selected tracks, not the selected FX).
This could be remedied by memorizing the selected tracks in Perform FX mode separately – you are already memorizing the Perform FX steps being selected separately on the Audio and MIDI sides. That way, when switching from one side to the other while still in Perform FX, we wouldn’t lose anything, and the FX would be applied on all sides at the same time–bliss!
Note: this is different from having the same Perform FX applied to both sides at the same time, which I know is something people have mentioned. I’d like Perform FX to be applied on both sides at the same time, while still being different FX pages (and that still allows me to set them identically on either side if needed).
You guys fixed the USB-C audio problem!!! Thank you for listening and sneaking this into the update! This makes the Play+ almost perfect for my workflow. I tried it out last night - I was able to plug in my iPad and scroll through the synth patches with no issue. I was able to use a midi generator in AUM and recorded it to the Play+ then select a patch. No restarting, no reconnecting!
