Tracker vs Tracker mini [discuss]

a place to discuss the pro’s & cons of each in comparison to one another.

what things do you prefer on each machine?

I’ll go first:

I love the size and battery on the mini. that portable pick it up instead of your phone vibe is amazing.
the joypad + menu/shortcut buttons works great with the tracker paradigm. the extra ram is a plus too.

I really wish the mini had like 2 rows of pads. they are sorely missed, and a real plus for the OG.

for me, how the pads function across the whole OG tracker ui is wonderful. they are the main thing that makes me lean towards it.
that and the metal faceplate & clacky buttons.

I’m quite torn between the 2 for these reasons. both excel for different reasons. maybe getting both is the correct answer

I have both and prefer using the mini for obvious memory/stereo sample reasons. The form factor is perfect and with my own shortcut settings I was able to navigate quickly and enter notes just as easily. It turns out the pads and knobs aren’t necessary, but I can see why most people miss them.

Con: I wish the Delete and Copy buttons were swapped. I wouldn’t have minded an internal speaker, simply because I work and at work headphones are not at all conducive to remaining perceptive and I can imagine that other real world situations might apply.

yea i agree, page navigation is very good on the mini.

I prefer pattern switching on the OG having the visual representation on the pads when you hold the pattern button. that’s very nice.

and entering notes is perfectly good on the mini (very similar to on m8). it’s nice having the option to live rec with the pads on OG I find.

I’m a big fan of the USB Multitracking on the Mini, as it allows me more freedom during the creative process, by playing/experimenting with each Track much deeper, before comitting to something final.

I’m also enjoying the integrated microphone far more than the radio from the OG. Stereo samples and the extra RAM are nice additions as well.

While i like the formfactor of the Mini, it didn’t really matter to me as much, since portability wasn’t my main focus. Hence i prefer the OG’s Formfactor, eventhough since getting the Mini, the OG has been slightly more neglected

Which leads me to the most contentious parts between the OG and the Mini. The Pads and the Jogwheel:

I like the way the Jogwheel works on the OG Tracker and i think Polyend did a great job replacing this with the 4 Incremental Buttons on the Mini. They both are a great usability fit for their respective device.

Now the thing i miss the most though, are playable pads for note entry on the Mini (either when simply editing or live recording). This is where the OG Tracker still wins me over. The ability to jam away on the pads or live record is extremely powerful and fast when ideating.

It’s not a huge hindrance in my opinion, but it does force you to approach music-making differently… it’s more conceptual, analytical… vs spontaneous, emotional in my opinion.

Of course that can be easily fixed by using an external controller - i personally use an Arturia Minilab 3 - and there are a couple wishes (1,2,3) for functionality to use some of the buttons on the Mini for note entry. So we shall see…

But for now, the OG Formfactor is still my favorite

I totally agree with that :point_up_2: very well put.

  • ah yes I forgot about usb multitrack audio. defo a plus for thyne mini

“and there are a couple wishes (1,2,3) for functionality to use some of the buttons on the Mini for note entry. So we shall see…”

that’s the top wish for me right there. think I gave my first ever vote to one of those. it would be very interesting indeed if something along those lines comes to be.
