Play 1.6.0 and Play Plus 1.2.0 Live Finger Drumming Mode Beta

This firmware adds a live finger drumming mode for Play and Play+ that changes a track from a sequencer to 16 live triggers. Each step on a track can trigger a different note, sample, MIDI channel, or even PC change.

New Features

Finger Drumming Mode

How to use:

  • Place the desired samples, parameters, notes, MIDI notes or CC messages on the 16 steps of the track you wish to use as live input pads.
  • Select the tracks you want to turn into live pad triggers with the shift button.
  • Turn the Track Speed knob all the way to the left to “Pads”.
  • Press play to engage the live pad triggers. When the sequencer is stopped pads can be edited.
  • Finger drumming mode does not enable live recording to another track.

Known Issues:

  • Changing from a pattern with finger pads active to one without doesn’t restart sequencer

:warning: Beware that beta releases might introduce new bugs that may lead to loss of work, data corruption, performance degradation, or crashes. We recommend backing up your SD card before trying the beta.

If you run into any issues please share them with us by logging a Bug in Backstage.
Thank you.

So excited for this!

Woah this looks nice, thanks. So if I understand correctly you can play other tracks at the same time that were previously laid out (say the top 3 tracks), but this allows you to play live on top of it by setting up other tracks as “pads” (say, the bottom 3 tracks)? Sweet.

You definitely picked the right week to push new cool features to the Play+! (with Teenage Engineering likely announcing the OP-Z 2 Nov 14th)

Correct, the MIDI perform and Finger drumming betas are completly seperate. We’re changing how we’re handling firmware updates, instead of trying to do 1 massive update and keeping them separated will help us get these features and bug fixes out faster.

Thanks, this opens up some new possibilities. Chop a loop into slices with the sample start/end knobs and play with it live. Prepare your custom scale, i.e. only the notes you need to play a particular melody and again play it live with ease.
Would love being able to record in this mode…

Great news, thank you very much!

Hi There!

I cannot get this build to load in my original Play. It goes thru the 30 second flashing, then reboots, then sits there with the Polyend logo and status bar does not move.

Do you want me to fill out an official bg report?

Thanks!
Michael…

Hey @michael, have a look here, there is a workaround available:

Thank you, sir! Checking it out now…

Michael…

When I set a track to pads mode and start playback, the first step on the track produces sound. Is that an intentional/known thing? Looks like it shouldn’t produce any sound.

Sounds like a bug. Workaround might be leave first step blank for now.

Funnily I’ve been primarily using this feature as a MIDI program change trigger for another synth.

This firmware bricked my Play.
The Polyend logo appears with a progress bar that never moves

Hey there @choogaface. Do not fret, your Play isn’t bricked. Give this bug report a read for a current workaround

Thank you Dan.

Wow, this opens up the device to a new level of creativity.

Are the pad track automatically populated by the current folder or you have to assign them manually ?

Will external devices be able to trigger those finger drumming pads ?

Thanks for the amazing work !

Super neat. So excited to try it out. Thanks
