MIDI issues on Step?

Anybody else experiencing MIDI issues with the Step? When I use clock-out alone it works, but as soon as i put in an MIDI cable to the Steps MIDI in as well the output clock does not work properly again. Even if the MIDI in is set to “off” in the MIDI settings the pure fact that a cable is in the MIDI input, disturbs the MIDI output. Any similar experiences and/or solutions?

We’ll look into this, although it is not something I experienced and have been using Step with MIDI in and out, but my first guess before testing - Is there a loop going on in the MIDI chain? Is the MIDI out going through other devices and back into the pedal? What cable and device are you using to input MIDI?

Hi yes seems I’m having problems with midi sync too

Syncing from Step midi Jack out to a Roland Tr6s that’s then going into the Steps input. Sending transport to Tr6s as well

Works fine everything in Sync!

But then sending PC/CC messages to the Step Midi Jack in, the Roland loses sync and it’s a big mess.

no loop - I have the sync issues on the output as soon as a TRS cable (tried different types) is put into the MIDI in of the Step. Even if no device is connected to the MIDI cable. Just from putting something into the MIDI in the MIDI out stops working properly.

Hopefully I’ve found the solution to my problem. I thought Midi settings were global once set but they are per song so everything midi gets reset to default if you change song.

Is an option for Global settings possible for ease of workflow?

Thanks.

I’m also having MIDI sync issues with my Boss looper. It syncs fine with other drum machines, starting and stopping as expected, but the step doesn’t react properly and doesn’t seem to sync or receive start/stop data.

Hiho

I have all kind of strange behavior with midi clock on my step. And as it seems. My Step doesn’t see to send midi clock at all. I can’t get midi clock to my RC500, Loopy Pro or Morningstar MC8

I just found out that midi out over usb works. But the mini jack midi out is not working on mine. Is anybody else using the mini jack midi out successfully?

Hey there @bogii and welcome to Backstage. Great to have you here!

Just checking, have you gone into the Main menu and set the Clock Out to the MIDI Jack? I have the Clock on the Step being sent to the Synth via MIDI Jack without any issues.

Thank you
Yes i did. I tried almost every combination possible. Clock out to Midi Jack. To Midi Jack and USB. And all this with all other possible Midi Settings. Hoping it solves something ;D.

Hello Friends.

Just to prevent others from the same problem.
I solved it. Of course the problem was not the STEP but me.

I used a Midi Jack cable Type-A. Step needs Type-B for the output. So with the right cable everything works like a charm :).

One question to @Dann . Is STEP configured to give midi through??? If so. Is this adjustable?

Thanks a lot

Glad you got the MIDI issue sorted. As far as I know, there is no way to configure the Step MIDI out as a THRU. Perhaps @Mitch can confirm.

The thing is.

I have connected the Step to my Morningstar MC8 which is connected to my Ipad (via widi). Step provides the clock AND the Transport which is absolutely great!!! It works perfect.
What i tried and want to do is also connecting the midi out of the MC8 to Step. This way i can make Setlists on the MC8 and choose Songs via PC messages. The problem is that (as it seems) the transport forms a kind of loop. As soon as i start Setp the Morningstar goes crazy. The bpm goes up over 500 and so on. If i put the transport out to off on the step. Everything is fine.
This is a pitty because this way i need to use a second midi controller just for switching songs :/.
A lot of room on my pedalboard lost.

I take it that the MC8 doesn’t have a way to filter the MIDI it sends and recieves? Perhaps there’s a way to filter out sending Transport messages that are coming out of the MC8?

As far is i know it can’t filter that out. The thing is that i need it to put out the transport messages to my Ipad.

Hi everybody, good to have this forum.
@Dann : When controlling the step with an external Midi-Controller: Is it possible, to change the patterns of a song immediately? So that the current pattern doesn´t run all the remaining steps until step 16 before it jumps to the next pattern? That would be really great for live use / improvising.

Hey there @t-engler and welcome to the club!! Great to have you join us.

As far as I know, this is not possible. @Mitch might have more insider info as I don’t think the current manual is 100% complete.

Hi @Dann, thanks for the superfast reply.
I already guessed that. Maybe this is possible for a future update? As I wrote, this feature is great for playing live / really “rocking” a drum machine. Some vintage drum machines work this way and I like that a lot.
But the effects switch is already a good workaround …

Yeah, I’m very much on the same page as you. It would make a really nice per-song option if pattern change had an option to either trigger immediately or at the end of current pattern.

Here on Backstage we have a Wishlist system, so anyone here can create wishes for features they’d like to see. At this moment Step hasn’t been added to the Wishlist, but once that happens, I encourage you to make a wish

Yes, the only way for immediate change right now is by pressing the buttons on the patterns, which I admit is a pretty fun way to use it, and I’ve played with it live as a desktop unit doing this. Anything is possible for future updates but as Dan mentioned the wishlist is how we process new features.

For Step the wishlist has not opened yet as the roadmap is already decided for firmware 1.1 and maybe 1.2 as well so we will wait until there is at least a chance of a feature being implemented before we start taking feature requests.
