My suggestion is to improve the song-creation workflow so you can create a groove/melody in one pattern, copy-and-duplicate it into other patterns really quickly, and edit them into variations of each other to rapidly build a song. Each time you copy-and-duplicate a new pattern number is created, so pattern n is duplicated into unique patterns n+1, n+2 and so on.
The workflow to duplicate a pattern into a new pattern to create a variation is clunky. Ideally if I’m working on pattern 1 I’d like to duplicate it into pattern 2 so I can quickly make a variation on pattern 1 using a “Duplicate and Copy pattern” function.
Current workflow is:
- Go to pattern 1
- Select all tracks and steps in pattern
- Copy them
- Find an empty pattern (which is probably not pattern 2 if I’ve been working for a while)
- Paste the steps into the new pattern
- Remember which new pattern is a variation of pattern 1 (and given we can’t name pattern this means remembering patterns (say) 22, 23 and 25 and variations of pattern 1)
Rapid creation of songs by removing the friction of creating variations of a base pattern. Unlocks creative flow and removes barriers.
Yes, copy-and-paste method that isn’t very fast and breaks your creative flow.
