Workflow improvement: faster way to duplicate and create variations of patterns

(First time? See Writing a good feature request)

My suggestion is to improve the song-creation workflow so you can create a groove/melody in one pattern, copy-and-duplicate it into other patterns really quickly, and edit them into variations of each other to rapidly build a song. Each time you copy-and-duplicate a new pattern number is created, so pattern n is duplicated into unique patterns n+1, n+2 and so on.

What is the problem?

The workflow to duplicate a pattern into a new pattern to create a variation is clunky. Ideally if I’m working on pattern 1 I’d like to duplicate it into pattern 2 so I can quickly make a variation on pattern 1 using a “Duplicate and Copy pattern” function.

Current workflow is:

  1. Go to pattern 1
  2. Select all tracks and steps in pattern
  3. Copy them
  4. Find an empty pattern (which is probably not pattern 2 if I’ve been working for a while)
  5. Paste the steps into the new pattern
  6. Remember which new pattern is a variation of pattern 1 (and given we can’t name pattern this means remembering patterns (say) 22, 23 and 25 and variations of pattern 1)

What do you want to achieve?

Rapid creation of songs by removing the friction of creating variations of a base pattern. Unlocks creative flow and removes barriers.

Are there any workarounds?

Yes, copy-and-paste method that isn’t very fast and breaks your creative flow.

A very quick way i use to do this, is to utilize song mode for it.

Within it, it is super easy to create new patterns and copy all or individual tracks to new patterns. Or rearrange if you want to.

Would this be a valid solution for you?

Ah I see what you mean; do a Shift-Add Slot creates a new empty slot with a new pattern and then you can paste a pattern into it. Do that multiple times to create your variations!

Thanks!
