[Suggestion] Device/Sample chosen after track selection

Hi team, just a comment in the air for your consideration.

First, amazing jam videos, I hope you can create more because it’s a great way to learn and watch different workflows.

Second, watch this: https://youtu.be/5faRm_tF66c?si=4BKWiqFUmU6ltItF&t=370

I often encounter this same “issue”: selecting a track before choosing a device or sample. This forces me to deselect the track, pick what I need, and then reselect the track again.

Whether it’s due to mental models or another reason, my question is: Would it be possible to keep the track selected while switching to another function that requires track-level adjustments (like devices or samples)—as opposed to effects (e.g., delay), which need notes to be applied first?

I hope that makes sense!

Thank you.

Hey @pineal, first of all thank for listening and glad you liked it.
Any specific things you’d like to see in videos like that?

Haha you caught me getting confused.
But i agree with you, when doing things “live” or on the fly, it can happen very quickly that you press the wrong thing or don’t keep the state of things in mind.

I was thinking about this as well.
The current way it works technically/logically makes sense and i don’t think it should be changed.. but a way to change a instrument/device on the Play for live performance purposes would be really cool.

I was thinking.. what if there was a way to create a Device/Instrument presets per project, that you can recall? This could hold information like:

  • The chosen device/instrument/sample
  • A set of predefined parameters (like, Note length, velocity/volume, delay, reverb, chance, etc)

I’m just having a hard time figuring out how you would access those. I’m thinking:

  • Click the screen encoder
  • Have a Menu entry called Presets (that is the first in the list, so you can click right into it)
  • Then choose a preset (you would have to be able to name them)
  • When chosen, this because the current active preset and any note recorded uses that data

This way i doesn’t affect the current functionality.

If I’m understanding you fine, it will be something like:

But also:

Had to make a quick video, trying to explain what i mean. Which is probably/hopefully easier to understand

So essentially, the idea of the preset system is:

  • have a way to quickly change the device/sample/synth and it’s parameters quickly
  • it should NOT change any existing steps, it should just prepare the parameters so that you can continue creating steps

Hi @Sandroid, get it. I think your approach goes one step forward hehe. I’ll try to do my best to answer you with another video explaining better my “issue” and link it with yours.

this is a great idea ! would really love this

Hi @Sandroid here my answer. I hope is useful too

Download the video here. Pass: play

Never heard of Filepizza before, but technically a good idea, except that i requires both parties to be online to do the transfer  .. which doesn’t seem to be the case at the moment?

I can recommend Swisstransfer if you are looking for something neutral (files are deleted from the servers after 30 days)

Try this:woozy_face:

That worked. Will have a look in a bit and post a reply. :hugs:

Alright! So based on your video. There are two topics to talk about:

  1. Behaviour when an empty track is selected
  2. Behaviour of the Beat Fill Function

1. Behaviour when an empty track is selected

So the current behaviour makes “sense” if you look at it from a certain perspective.

  • The “Select All Steps” from a track function, was meant to be used as a way to quickly select all the steps of a track to change ALL the parameters at once.
  • If there are no steps, there is nothing to change

But i agree with you, it would be nice if the behaviour was as follows:

  • If there are no steps → allow us to set parameters so we can then put steps with them
  • If the track has steps → work exactly as it works now

2. Behaviour of the Beat Fill Function

This is actually just the way that Beat Fill works. Which is very specific:
It will always try to fill 3 tracks:

  1. Kick
  2. Snare
  3. Hats

So if you only select one track, it will only fill the Kick.
Check out Section 6.13 Using the Fill Tool in the Manual (Page 142), to learn about the different ways the Fill function can work :hugs: . What you probably want to use is the Random Fill.

I hope i covered everything

All get it, thank you.

That’s a great idea! I’d love to see a dedicated instrument per project. Maybe even throw in a fancy shmancy shift+button keystroke to let us toggle a couple on the fly😎 lol

The way i explained it, it was a submenu in the menu. So at that point it could be a list of n-amount of instrument/device presets i suppose. But yes, they would be tied to the project.

Essentially it would be similar to what an Instrument on the Tracker is:

  • A sample / or device (synth/midi channel)
  • all parameters associated with that (reverb, delay, note length, volume/velocity, etc)

The reason i didn’t include a keystroke suggestion, is because i don’t think there would be one that wouldn’t break current behaviour. Unless you are willing to go triple-key-strokes  . I think everything else is already pretty occupied.

Thanks for the video explanation🤘not to rush ya or anything, but is this up for votes by chance? I’d put one of mine up for this for sure!

No, i will have to create a feature request for it. This was purely a discussion based on experiences when it comes to using the play for live performances.

The way i see it, there are two distinct feature requests here:

  • A Instrument/Device preset system for projects
  • Ability to change device/instrument parameters, when a empty track is selected (via select all)

Preset System feature request was created:

And created the second feature request for changing parameters when an empty track is selected here:
