Severe audio glitching and crackling with CPU overload warning

Bug Description

I’m very frequently getting audio crackling and glitching on the Synth.
Also CPU High and CPU Overload when I’m below the max voice count. With 3 Voice VAP + 2 Voice PMD + 1 Voice Grain, audio turns to complete gibberish. It’s also noticeable on the actual menus that the machine is struggling.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Load my attached project file.

Occurrence / Frequency

Depends on the settings and voice counts. If you load the project I sent, you’ll immediately get a CPU High warning

  • Version: 1.0.1

Disable tempo sync on delay. Your issue may be different, but there are known issues with the delay and sync

Thanks for the tip. Tried it, still the same. It’s not that apparently.

There’s a component that’s the time-synced delay, but I’ve also found it very easy to overdrive the Synth and to induce clipping & distortion. It’s pretty sensitive as it relates to audio levels.

I think the Synth should definitely have a more elegant solution for the levels, probably a limiter.
My issue seems to be more cpu related because even the menus become erratic (and the constant CPU warnings on the screen give it away too  ).

I also encounter this problem regularly.

The next time you encounter this, I’d love to know the Engines that were in use and the # of voices allocated to each.

I can get it to happen with the Atcha_SunrisePeaking scene.

Blue: 4 Voices, PHZ
Yellow: 1 Voice, PMD
Magenta: 1 Voice Grain

Thanks! Really appreciate it

I’ve been jamming on that preset for the past 20 minutes and everything is smooth as butter here. All engines with latched arps going maxing out voices, reverb, delay being sent to all synths and everything is rolling along fine.
Anything noteworthy that was going on while you encountered this? Would love to get a saved scene to try it on my end.

Thanks Dan. I’ll try it again tonight.

Plug in a midi cable and try it again. I get strange results even with tempo sync off and not triggering anything via midi - but I have a midi cable plugged in.

Just tried this Scene and I also get it to show CPU High warnings and the menus become a bit unresponsive.
Particularly noticeable if you start adjusting engine and filter parameters on the PMD engine.

I can provoke CPU HIGH by turning up the combo knobs aka C1, C2, C3 on the grids for that scene they mentioned above.

I also get popping with BogdanRaczynski_Two, VenusTheory_Moods, VenusTheory_Lakeside, VenusTheory_Darklore (minor popping). Those are just the few that I tried. I didn’t get any popping with the TomK Scenes. I didn’t make any changes to the Scene when I played them and got popping.

Here is the link to my Atcha_SunrisePeaking scene, but I didn’t change anything on it.

I tried this, and with Clock In set to Internal and Transport In set to Off, I do not get any clipping on Atcha_SunrisePeaking. With Clock In set to MIDI In Jack and Transport In set to MIDI In Jack, I get a lot of clipping and popping.

Maybe this helps narrow down the clipping/popping?

I had this same issue with some of the presets mentioned, albeit intermittently. I switched to using a different usb power adapter and retested, so far so good. Will update further.

I get the same popping with a couple of different USB adapters, including the Polyend adapter.

I made a crappy cell phone video of the problem. When MIDI In is set to Internal there is no popping. When MIDI In is set to MIDI In Jack, there is popping. I hope you are able to hear it.

I also made an audio file in case you can’t hear it in the video. All I’m doing is switching between MIDI In set to Internal and MIDI In set to MIDI In Jack.

Hi @dontspamjason , this is a different issue logged here: Synced Delay clicking/stuttering when receiving external MIDI clock

This bug report is about glitching when reaching high CPU warning, I’ll update the title to reflect this.
