Radio scanning leads to frozen unit

Bug Description

Experiencing Device freezes when scanning/scrolling radio stations

Reproduction Steps

May be a device/hardware specific issue as other users were not able to reproduce it.
But here is a video showing the behaviour on the actual unit:

Occurrence

Not always but consistently

Found in

  • Firmware Version: 1.9.1
  • Firmware Build 1138

Model: PTM...

Happens with older firmware as well.

Hey @kyledmoore. Good to see you here. I just re-categorised this as a bug.

I think we need assistance from another moderator to verify this, as I only have the Mini from the Tracker series, so I can’t test this myself.

Hi, thanks. I assume this needs to be recreated internally regardless, but if you need anything else from me, lmk.

I tried my best on the OG Tracker, but couldn’t get it to crash:

Could you make a small video clip for us @kyledmoore?

Also, on the back of your Tracker you should have a Serialnumber.
What does it start with (should look something like PTC....)?
Let us know what the letters are, no need for the numbers.

Perhaps useful to mention, this also happend to the unit with the cut out channel bug. I could reproduce freezes on scanning. Plugging out the power cable brings the device back to life.

If you encounter crashes when scanning, does your device also have problems with radio gain?
Maybe there’s another pattern.

That’s an interesting question. i’d be interested to know that as well. Try highering the gain past 16 and see if one of the channels (left or right) cuts out.

Hi, thanks for following up…serial starts with PTM.

@Sandroid

FWIW, just left it on a station so it didn’t crash and cranked the gain and had no channel dropouts.

I haven’t gotten my hands on it yet, but would be interested to see if 1.8.0 fixes it on my machine. I don’t actually know that this was a proper regression after all as I’ve never tried to access the radio on anything but 1.9.1. If that is helpful info for diagnosis, lmk where to get it (I just tried hand editing the URL provided for 1.9.1 to no avail) and I’ll attempt…thanks.

I’ve actually started a firmware archive, you should be able to find 1.8 and 1.7 if you want to go even further back:

That would be helpful indeed, thank you!

Thanks - confirmed hangs w/ 1.8.0 as well. BTW, had to rename the file to PolyendTracker_{version} for it to show up…seems to filter by that prefix. Trying earlier versions now.

Ah true, i remember wanting to fix that but then i forgot. Thanks for the reminder, i just fixed the filenames now.

I’m curious to hear if 1.7 works for you :crossed_fingers:

Summary of what I observed:

  • 1.7.2+ - Hangs near immediately on changing radio freq w/ jog wheel
  • 1.6.0 - Hangs after a few seconds of tuning
  • 1.5.0 - As above
  • 1.4.0 - After a few seconds of tuning the radio output ceases, but unit does not crash
  • 1.3.1 - Hangs after a few seconds of tuning
  • 1.2.2 - Hangs after a few seconds of tuning

Notes:

  • Didn’t repeat tests for given firmware multiple times (except for 1.4.0, 1.9.1), or tune radio in scientific fashion so unsure if time-to-crash is indicative of anything or variant due to some race condition.
  • Definitely seems like there was better error handling in 1.4.0 - perhaps a try/catch got removed somewhere at some point?
  • Gain was left at 0 for all tests
  • Reflashed 1.4.0 after attempting 1.2.2 and it definitely takes longer to get the radio output to cease and didn’t crash the 2nd attempt either.

Hey @kyledmoore thank you so much for all your testing - you’ve done plenty.
One last question: what Radio Region are you using?

(found in Config → General → Radio Region)

Looks like it is set to Europe, which isn’t correct. Just changed to US. I’ve left it on 1.4.0 to play around w/ the radio - if there’s any reason to think that should fix, I’ll attempt 1.9.1 again.

You’re very welcome. You can repay me by considering a feature request while you’re in there…I just noticed the RDS info displaying, which is really cool. It would be swell if in addition to autonaming one could use the current RDS title for saving the recording :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:. Snoogins.

Confirmed 1.9.1 still crashes w/ the region set to US FWIW.

Hi @kyledmoore Please fill out the RMA: RMA Application Form • Polyend
It seems like a faulty radio module we need to exchange.

Thank you. RMA filed and this ticket referenced.
