I tried out the mass storage mode in the latest update and now my SD card is fried and all my projects lost. It was a Polyend shipped SD card so probably a cheap POS. I’ve had this before with their cards, and its a shame to lose any unbacked up work like that so would advise any new users to immediately bin their Polyend SD card and get a more reliable one.
Also always make a habit to have a backup card or a backup saved on your computer or somewhere else. No card is 100% bulletproof from failure.
Sorry to hear that happend to you @pandigital
Nothing wrong with the SD cards that come with Polyend devices. The main suspects of corruption that I’ve seen is USB hubs, lack of proper power, and the #1 being not ejecting the USB device on PC/Mac before exiting USB storage mode.
@Dann I’d be interested to know what specifically about polyend devices / file format destroys SD cards when they aren’t ejected correctly. Both my tracker and play included SD cards died, but I haven’t seen this with other USB devices.
This is nothing specific to Polyend and is best practices for any storage device over USB due to how caching works when writing information to a drive.
Sad to hear both cards failed on you. Never had an issue with my Mini, Tracker+ or Play+
There have for sure been others that have had cards fail, you’re not alone. It’s just not a common issue.
Hi. No shade here … but as a 10000% experienced engineer - I can testify it is vital to correctly eject from modern (or even some vintage .. WIN98 is notorious) OSs before removing media.
You’ll find heaps of people on the inter tubes saying the opposite (even L**** Tech Tips has in the past) .. the the simple thing is - that OSs speculatively delay write to media to improve caching/access speed (and somewhat to pretend to the user via UI that they’re “done”).
[oh, if you’re on a Mac, add any mounted removable media to the ‘Search and Privacy’ exclusion settings for Spotlight - as that will officially stop them being a candidate for indexing]
It’s a real shame that you lost your work - and if it’s not related to the eject scenario then forgive my ‘chip in’ here. Alas I agree with the ADMIN that there is nothing wrong with the cards supplied.
FYI - I always eject → wait for mounted device to disappear from Finder/Explorer/other → count to 3.
(kinda miss the days of when USB keys had activity LEDs on them - not that would help with a µSD card inserted into a device LOL)
… and yes I have lost things in this manner in my distant history - but lesson learnt !
Many people have had the same problem, and I am sure it is not just down to them.
Your welcome to your opinion, but please note I am just offering facts and not specific causes.
It’s not many, but yes some have had issues as I said earlier. Clearly from the volume of PE devices that use SD cards and the number of bum cards that have been reported, it’s not an issue.
The only certainty is that there are many people who have and have had the same problem.
Never talked about causes.
For me, it’s a problem.
Can you elaborate on what your issue was, or point to me a thread here on backstage that discusses it?
I think you’re joking!
It’s funny how Polyend categorically refuse to acknowledge there are issues with their SD cards. Even more absurd is seeing other forum users insist this is “normal” and that you should just not use the factory card.
For me, this is the first time in my life an SD card has failed. I’ve honestly never dealt with this before. The unit is only a couple of years old, and the SD card has been removed from the device only a few times.
So either Polyend’s supplier provided them with genuinely trash SD cards, or the Polyend hardware is somehow killing the cards.
