Play Plus Streaming Audio over USB: Potential Bug?

I will do one tomorrow. I am mentally washed LOL

I did hook it up to Ableton Live via Mac, no hub, and got the same distortion.

Thanks for your time on this!

Make sure that you set Abletons audiorate to the same as the play+. So 44.1Khz. Anyrhing else might cause issues.

did anybody make a bug report ?
how does that work ?

Apologies for going off topic, but didn’t know this was a known bug. I posted a similar bug earlier. Seems to be related to the Macros not going back to their proper patch states in some occasions.

On topic; It’s my last week of work before the holidays and has been particularly busy, but I do have an iPad Pro and Play+ and will take some time over the vacations using @Sandroid 's suggestions and report my experiences.

same for ipad Aum etc btw

so maybe the title should change to ā€˜streaming audio over usb in general’ not only ipad

I hope I covered everything and broke it up into three chapters. I did not use any hubs as I essentially got the same result, even when I powered them.

I will update the title of this thread as it’s not just iPad as suggested.

:Moderators/Admin if this is a duplicate post of a known issue, please delete this post as to not cause confusion. Thanks

Seems like a bad news / good news thing. If it was only iPad we could go well maybe it’s apples fault and there is nothing we can do about it. When it happens in ableton too then it seems like a more global issue that if they fixed would also fix the iPad.

I just scrolled through every FAT patch on the list twice with USB audio on my mac mini setup with FL Studio and no sound issues noticed. And all the patches on the ACD synth once.

Then I tried a similar and slightly more intensive test on Ableton live, no sound issues either. On the iPad this type of thing produces epic distortion after just a few patch changes usually.

 :man_shrugging:

going to install Ableton and give that a try as well. I have a M1 MacBook Air from 2020 to test with.

Ok so here’s the setup and results:

  • Ableton Live 11 Lite (limited to 8 channels)
  • Apple Macbook Air M1 (2020)
  • Play+ directly connected via USB-C
  • Audio Output goes back to the Play+ (using headphones on the Out)

  • When not changing/previewing patches, everything works as expected
    • you can edit a synth without issues
    • you can change the macro values without issues
  • Once you start previewing / changing patches for a synth, eventually the output gets distorted / broken
  • I’ve decided to go through the ACD Patches: I didn’t make it down the list before this occurs.
  • When changing the Audio Output Device to something else - like the the Macbook Speakers or external Headphones - the audio is perfectly fine there
  • When switching Audio Output Device back to the Play+, the audio remains garbled until you power cycle the Play+

To me this is clearly a bug at this point. So i’d suggest someone may want to open a Bug for it and reference this post. I’ve created a bug report for it, but since i’m in the beta it won’t be visible to everyone.

SO the big mystery is why it is working in some cases. I am doing a double no no, I have a HUB built into my monitor, that I have another unpowered hub plugged into and then use my play+ into that second one. It works without issues when changing sounds, if I switch that hub to a powered one, then my Play+ is not even properly detected to do anything like it reports as 0 input 0 output or something strange like that. Had my no no case not worked, I might have tried a more standard one, but since it works, I’ll keep on doing it.

Edit: I’m doing one tiny difference and maybe this is what makes it work, I output to my usb external audio interface which outputs to my headphones and not my play+ again?

Story of my life… haha… Spend so much time experimenting and setting up and breaking down equipment i feel i barely ever get much recorded… anyway. AUM and the Play+ can usually run anywhere for 1-6 minutes before the sound starts distorting. Tried all different connections, different power chargers. It seems to work directy lUsbC to UsbC into ipad pro and also with official Mac hub. Third-party hubs didnt work for me… I’m going to test it on my audio interface on desktop for Bitwig next. The audio output was the main reason I upgraded to plus. So far this AUM bug seems to be disappointing. If i can get it to work on my desktop DAW then i know its an ipad issue… Trying to find a work around to get it functional in AUM for more than a few minutes other than that the Play+ is such a fun device to use. Hopefully this audio out bug gets fixed eventually

I have the same. Play plus to asio4all to bitwig.
After about 3 minutes distortion.

the told me repeatedly on this forum that they will not fix this.

very disappointing indeed

Just to make sure. One important aspect is to have everything running at 16bit 44.1khz.

And then there is one other bug that you may encounter:

Really wow? I wonder why? I guess the audio output feature was meant specifically for DAW. I know some iOS app developers and they tell me frequently about the frustrations involved with outside compatibility. I still love the Play. I will route it into my audio interface on my desktop today to use in Bitwig. I’m assuming that should function properly…

I watched your video and it seems the distorted sounds endlessly return for me after a few minutes… any advice? I cant seem to find many resources on using the USB audio output. Currently cant seem to do multi-channel in Bitwig either. I think I have spent more hours, since I upgraded, on tests then actually making music at this point hahaha… frustration levels are maximizing as I have such a finite amount time to use these boutique sound toys…
