Play Plus Streaming Audio over USB: Potential Bug?

I can only advice you on the things that have worked for me:

  • Ensure to start and connect things in the correct order
  • Ensure that the audio routing throughout is 16bit 44.1khz

Since doing that i have not encountered any issues anymore, besides the synth patches changing bug that can lead to distortion. Which hasn’t bothered me much since i tend to just create a new patches all the time anyway.

Feel free to either chat me up here in the Backstage chat or on Discord for a more realtime convo regarding this. :muscle:

I did notice my sample rate was off after changed that it gave me a few more minutes before it crackled up… Frustration levels increased so packed up… Took a break then thought maybe i can change some other settings in AUM. Didnt feel like unpacking again so just grabbed the USB to C from my intech Grid and it worked flawlessly! Thought to myself that’s insane… So the Polyend Play+ USB cord was the issue? Unpacked it and tried it… One minute later, sound breaks… Assume its just faulty so get my USB from my previous Play… same thing… so try usb from Tracker… same thing… go back to intech and then tried endlessly to break the sound. Gave it about 15 minutes and it still worked flawlessly… Dont have time to continue so will try again next week and see it will go longer… So in theory i feel it must have to do with the Polyend issued USB cords in my instance. Im using the Mac Branded hub and latest model of Ipad Pro. I hope that was the problem because I saw you and Wabbit both pushing out some clean sounds and drool would pool within my prominent face hole… Thanks again for the tips… I will report back next week if all runs smoothly but the amount of reference material out there on USB audio multi-channeling out is very limited. Id love to see something on routing in windows 10 and Bitwig Studio too…

yes i noticed also that i should not use the provided cable

and yes;

which settings to be used in asio4all?

there’s a method of opening all programs in sequence
and there’s setting to be used
but where are they stated?

(ok, daws will differ. mine is bitwig on amd win10)

o yes, weird thing is, the distortion sometimes gets recorded and sometimes it doesnt.

maybe it’s also about how you monitor the whole setup. i like to record monitor post-daw ofcourse, but dont know yet which works best, in other words; havent found anything yet that doesnt end up in crackles.)

whaat? so it is a user problem? then they must be sure it should not happen.
please give us a good guide to follow then

I couldnt seem to get it to function with ASIO4all but i didnt put much time into it and never used that interface before. My arturia Minifuse 2 has always been good to me for all other instances until now…
I was just so happy after hours of trials and error to finally be able to get it working in AUM. I use my Play, now Play+, mainly on the road so ipad track editing and recording in AUM just seemed so amazing for my situation. I dont do a lot of live instrument recording in desktop DAW these days, outside of Vocals or just building for sound to be used in my professional work and/or experiments.
I plan on doing a lot more tests next chance I get. A tiny bit of crackle may even give the sound more “flavour” hahah… Lo-fi all day! Thanks again for the fast replies and great info…

I am using the Play + with an iPad and I can get it running fine (except for the synth selection bug more on that later). Here’s what you have to do:

  • Make sure no DAW is open on your iPad
  • Plug in the Play + to your iPad
  • Turn on the Play +
  • Change your audio output to the Play in your iPad control panel
  • Open AUM or Drambo (DAW) and open a audio channel to the Play +

This should all be working fine as long as you don’t do the following:

  • Don’t change audio output (to bluetooth for example)
  • Don’t play any other audio on your iPad
  • Don’t change your synth patch

Note: You can use Bluetooth headphones but make sure they are selected as audio output BEFORE you connect the Play +

I have a workaround for the synth patch bug. Basically if you preview synth patches you will get distorted audio. The workaround is as follows:

  • Solo your synth track to save your ears
  • As you scroll through the patches you will find some sound gritty and distorted while other patches sounds fine
  • If you choose a “clean” patch all your audio will work distortion free
  • If you chose a dirty patch all you audio will be distorted (including your sample based tracks)
  • What if the patch you want is distorted? Simple select a random clean one and do the following…
  • If you scroll through the patches you will notice different sets are clean and dirty
  • Continue selecting clean patches until patch you want is clean.

Alternately build your synth track before you connect it to your iPad. Any existing synth patch will be clean when you turn on the Play + the first time.

Anyway I hope this helps somebody. It’s not ideal so I hope Polyend fixes this in an upcoming firmware update. One dark patch on a an otherwise great device.
