Mess - Hearing input audio when Mix is 100%

I’m not sure if this is something anyone else has noticed? When I’m using Mess with a series effect (i.e. 1. Micro Looper, 2. Delay, both with Effect Mix set to 100%) and running a sequence on the first effect where only a few steps are active, I hear the dry input audio on the inactive steps when the Mix knob is 100% wet.

With this setup, I would expect to hear just the effect on the active steps of the first effect sequence and silence on the inactive steps (or, if sequence steps are active on the second effect, the delay on the sound on the active steps from the first effect sequence).

Any thoughts/advice gratefully received!

Hey @phil-1869, welcome to Backstage, it’s good to have you!

Question

  • Is your Effect Mix (found on the second fx page) set to 100% on all the effects?

I would assume if not, then that is where the leak is coming from.
If so, i’d try just using one effect at a time and see where it’s leaking

Let me know what you find out :hugs:

I like this ‘leaking’ analogy :slightly_smiling_face:

Hello there @Sandroid, good to be here!

Effect Mix is at 100% for both effects, I’ve tried it on one effect of my two at a time and a new single effect and the result is the same. I have made a video…It’s not YouTube quality.

Effects will pass the dry audio if there is no trigger on an effect even with the Mix at 100%. I know this isn’t how an average effect works but it makes more sense for most sequenced effects in series.

If you want silence when the effect is off I would add another effect with level control, like a shaper, with saturation amount at 0 and level at 0, then turn that effect mix to 100% and place in the spots you want no audio to pass.

Thanks @Mitch, I’m just relieved that it’s not me missing something obvious! That sounds like a good solution, I’ll give it a go later.

That doesn’t seem to work either, I just get the input audio on all steps, same with just the Saturator enabled.

I think this is something I’d want, the ability to pass the FX audio only through a chain. To give an example of why, what I was trying to do was add some glitchy effects to a pre-existing track, so I only want the glitched steps in the output, getting the input audio as well is doubling up on the existing track. I realise I could use the mix control to balance the input and create a new track with the FX on, but it’d be nice to have the FX on their own if possible.

Anyway, enough moaning from me, apart from this minor issue, Mess has been a joy to use!

Okay that is strange, I tested it and I get silence when I have the mix at 100% and add a step with a saturator step with 0 Level I get silence on that step. Do you have the individual saturator track mix at 100% too?

Glad you are enjoying the Mess otherwise!

I hear dry audio when trying to use the Bitcrush effect also. It’s the only track and effect I have active. The effect is active every single step. The amount is 100, level 100, master Mix knob 100% wet, Effect Mix is also at 100%. There’s other Shaper effects that behave this was as well. Currently these effects are not usable at all. Who wants to hear a bitcrush effect along with a dry signal?

Just tried it on a step basis as mentioned above in case that made any difference, but it doesn’t unfortunately. Still the same as before. I’ve also noticed that when there are no effects enabled, the Input control doesn’t alter the level of the dry audio, so when you turn effects on there can be a massive jump,or dip, in volume.

Here’s a quick’n dirty video how to mute steps in MESS like @Mitch mentioned. Be sure to:

  1. Wiggle the mix knob after initializing a patch so MESS can register 100%
  2. Set the effect chain to series.
  3. The second effect for muting has to be 100% mix also.

And here’s one with the full tape sim patch. First half medusa dry, second half medusa+mess.
Subtle and super cool for worn out tape style.
bitcrush+tape modulation+low.cut+random tape delay. Listen on headphones.

I am about to make a longer informational video about MESS with all the bits and bobs.

Thanks, I think Patrick’s example might help.

As for bypass unity gain - that could possibly be added in the config menu for a firmware update in the future.

Thanks @Patrick, that wiggle of the Mix knob seems to have been the missing ingredient!

Thanks for all your help @Mitch. If it could be added that would be amazing, but the workaround helps immensely for now!
