Introducing The Polyend Synth

Of course, if you can’t afford more devices, make the best of what you have.

Can you share links to videos showing the Synth and the Play/Play+ together, please?

(Play+ owner here, and the Synth is on its way.)

I’m waiting for Polyend MotherSynth +

I know, I just found it ironic in a way.

You complain about negativity and controversy in the same breath as calling someone a hack and an embarrassment. Having and eating all that cake will give you the diabetes. Bo seems like a good guy who wears his heart and his flaws on his sleeve and always offers up a good perspective from a “I’m using this because it makes me happy” point of view. A lot of us here play with these things because they give us joy and distract us from the doom and gloom of the outside world. No one forces you to watch his videos, especially if you don’t appreciate his perspective, just click on something else and move on with your life.

Wow, this demo / introduction is so polished, it could have a Polyend logo and look official:

I thought extra percussion was added from another instrument but the description says that the sounds are 100% from the Synth. But maybe adding more than three parts in post-production? Otherwise call me extra surprised by how the three synths and 8 voices can be squeezed.

Look at the Tracker development and you’ll see the top wishes have been granted. As with all things resources are limited so the wishlist is helpful in deciding which features to priortize.

At one point you had about 1/2 of the pending wishes, it does take Dev hours to even reveiw if they are feasible so no, i think it was completely reasonable to ask you to slow down so we could collect feedback from others.

Sure, I understand, but at the same time, if I were designing a digital synthesizer, I would ensure the capability to use 10 instruments simultaneously. No one has created anything like that, except for the Virus TI. That’s why I’m a bit surprised why there are always so many limitations in Polyend products when it’s possible to harness the full potential of modern technologies. But I understand there are technical challenges. Just some thoughts.

Firmware updates would have happened with or without this product launch. Of course we also felt like we couldn’t launch a new product without getting the promised features out, so there was a deadline for these updates set.

We have changed things, even responding to your personal requests for more transparency. We’ve redone how we will be doing firmware updates, and maybe we will even have a schedule we share, I dont know. We’re breaking up large firmware updates to focus on stability and adding features as betas moving to be more transparent and open up betas for everyone to try.

First I’ll only say this once as the Synth+ jokes are just tired. Tracker and Play+ were unique situations. Of course we could, and may, use some of these ideas or synths in new or old devices, for example the PHZ is my favorite thing right now and would love to see it expanded in some way. However There is not a Synth+ 16 voice grid-synth coming.

The device is not something that could just be put in Play or the other way around. They are very different devices, and complement each other nicely.

If the Synth just had audio over USB, I’d consider purchasing it as a supplement to my beloved Play plus. Three more synths, which are easier to program, more synthesis types options, the pads with which it’s a lot easier to come up with melodies, additional FX… but alas.

I appreciate the answer, thanks.

The only thing I don’t get is why it was encouraged to “wish” anything to make Play better at all when only the tracker(s) eventually got something out of it (I haven’t seen what exactly, because I don’t follow those threads). This is the reason to be skeptical I was talking about: you may don’t really “click” with a device initially, but there’s an illusion that it may be fixed, just buy it now and make a perfectly formatted post.

So, if someone is in doubt about the new synth, I guess, it would be better not to post something, but to wait and keep your dollar close. This is the only language the capitalistic world understand, it seems.

As for the amount of wishes, as I have already said previously, personally, it doesn’t matter who created a thread if there actually is something to fix, and folks votes approve it. But if developers want to keep their eyes shut on the relevant features users want (and may get from competitors), I’m okay with it. It just seems this whole wishlist story doesn’t work here at all.

I see this mistake very often. Not specific to Polyend gear, but across the entire music gear scene.

I truely believe you should never buy a device based on what it could become and only based on what it is right now. Assuming what could be is the killer of joy.

So take this as friendly advice from someone who’s been there before  :hugs:

And i would like to point out one important information from the How the Wishlist works Page, that i assume you have read:

Here’s my personal take/philosophy on this:

I think the wishes are a great way - as you say - for people to express the features they desire, but it is by no means an obligation. Nor do i feel that we as customers are entitled to them.

What we are a 100% entitled to, is that a device works as intended based on its actual advertised capabilites. And the same is true for any features that a company adds down the line. Anything else is the proverbial cherry on top.

sure, no obligations. It’s just feels strange when you make a decision to ignore a feature everyone wait and make something else instead, like people are too dumb and they don’t understand what they really need? Or it’s not about what they need, but about how cool a new feature would look in promo videos?

It’s okay to ignore any particular wish, even upvoted one, but in my humble opinion it’s not okay to ask to post them and ignore them all at once. Literally, it’s like two of them were implemented really, very minor ones. In two years.

So, yeah, I agree, it’s not very clever to rely on possible features and wait for something.

Didn’t want to steal the thunder: the synth, ladies and gentlemen.

That does look really cool, have you been able to find any further info on how much connectivity they share or for now are we assuming it’s similar to what you can do between the play and tracker

Nope. Just excited to push play and jam. It’ll work out.

Ok, the author clarified that there are percussion samples added. This is what I expected anyway, and this is why I’m keeping the Play+.

I also want this and (naively or not, I don’t know) I hope that it’s a software limitation, not a hardware limitation, that can be fixed in future releases

Just like with the Play+, I get that it’s a device for performing, but my goal is to use it more as a tool to explore and sketch, an extension to my DAW, and I’m not the only one with this use in mind. The Play+ USB audio channels are almost always plugged to corresponding tracks in my DAW, and that works great.

Even without USB, the Synth is a very interesting synth, so I bought it. In the end, purchases are the best crowdfunding for next releases.

My mother ask me to make a wishlist every year for Christmas, but to be honest, despite that I had a SSL and API console on the top of it for few years now, I doubt that she will ever buy me one :frowning:

I get your point but it think like most of the issues in life it’s complicated

Since it is not Synth related I hide

We know that different wishes require different efforts and I think some of them even are not possible to develop at all. I think from an outside perspective it is sometimes not obvious why certain features are not developed. As far as I understand software development you have some low hanging fruits which can be developed in no time even if they seem complicated and therefore are sometimes prioritized. Others require a lot of rewriting code, developing new, testing and so on. From a users perspective I totally understand your frustration. One solution here could be indeed more transparency: „Thanks for your wish. We investigated some time and estimated that it would take to much effort/is not possible to program on our platform/is not in a cost-benefit-equation. Unfortunately we have to prioritize your wish down but since it is a widely demanded wish we will come back to it in the future.“ Anyways, I think Mitch and the team are doing a good job these days for more transparency

Not just these days. Which music hardware company with more than a couple of staff members you know that show up on a daily basis on community channels and share half as much or at all about anything (leave alone community wishes) as Polyend?

(This is off-topic for the Synth. If we want to discuss this farther what about a separate topic?)
