When I do Export Song on my Tracker Mini, the resulting file sometimes has a very long (seemingly) silent tail at the end - sometimes close to a minute.
I assume this is due to effects like delay and reverb that continue after the last note is played, but I can’t figure out how to get rid of it. I’ve tried putting a pattern at the end where every track has a note OFF/FAD/CUT, but it doesn’t seem to have any effect on the silent tail.
Any advice on how to get rid of this (other than editing in a DAW after).
Hey @Didac, hope you’re doing well. Sorry to hear you are experiencing this issue. I’m going to assume you are not running the latest firmware as this was a known issue and was fixed in 2.0.1
Current firmware is 2.0.2 and you can find it at the link below!
Oops! I should have said what firmware I’m on. I’m using 2.1.0 beta 1
I saw that bug from earlier (Render selection creates excessively long samples) and was wondering if it’s related, but I don’t have the issue when I do Render Selection, I have the issue when I do Export → Export Song
I just did a test where I took every instrument and set the reverb and delay to -inf and exported the song: the silent tail is gone. The file is 2:45 with reverb/delay on, 1:45 with reverb/delay off. Somehow the reverb/delay is ringing out for a full minute after the last note, but I really don’t hear anything. Is there a way to globally kill the reverb/delay on the whole project at the end or would I have to set the reverb/delay to 0 as FX1/FX2 for every instrument that had any reverb/delay?
Greetings. With the latest firmware, I encounter the same problem, This affects only the mini, not the tracker plus. Here you can see what this looks like: Stream ohne höhle by sonic structures and silent stretches | Listen online for free on SoundCloud
To be clear, in this instance the phenomenon fit nicely with my intentions and created a happy accident. So this is just an illustration of this effect.
Have a nice day.
Looking at the track I don’t have anything special, I have 1 pattern with offs on all tracks to make sure nothing drags on (1 step), then I added another with 8 steps all blank just so when I play it in song mode it doesn’t loop right way.
I can just clip it so it’s not a big deal, maybe it explains why I feel like the export is taking really long, it gets to the end then the display goes back to 00:00 and hangs there for a minute or so. Might be time to move this thread into the bug section
Just to make sure you guys don’t feel you are forgotten, I’ve been testing this. There’s a lot of use cases that could potentially create that silence at the end, so I’m going through both of your projects one by one and checking those use cases.
If I exhaust these, then we can create an official bug report together, and go from there.
Want to be sure that I’m not leaving you guys hanging and bring you into the loop as to where we are.
The difficulty in testing these scenarios is that not only could there be one instrument assigned with a really long feedback on the delay, one random fx slot has the potential to compound the tail that’s getting recorded.
I’ll share with you my results of grabbing 2 random demo song, and doing an export of them as I thought it was the better way to go about the song export and avoid the potential of user error.
Exporting the Drum and Bass demo gave me a tail of about 10-15 seconds after the song and felt like a very natural capture of the decay.
Exporting the Electro Demo added exactly 1 minute to the export (which seems aligned with the issue that was initially reported of a minute of silence added to the export).
To be clear, the export of Pattern and Song are meant to capture the tail of your effects. Whereas when you do a “Render Section”, it’s a much more tighter cut.
I’ll be running more tests with demo projects over the week trying to nail this down. If we pinpoint what the issue is I promise we’ll get a bug report going on this.
I think it makes sense to capture the long tail, especially since it might sometimes be desirable. Would it be easier for me if it faded out a bit sooner because it’s barely audible after 5-10s yes, is it a lot of trouble to fade/trim afterwards on the computer? no not really.
The part that bothered me most / feels glitchy is that on the UI I see:
Progress bar and timer counting to end of song
Bar is full, but timer is reset and nothing seems to be happening
Hopefully you’re seeing the same?
I don’t know what is possible but if it was simply more clear on the UI like “Rendering effects” or some other text and either the timer keeps increasing or starts counting up from 0 again. Or some kind of feedback / progress (since it’s a tail it’s not necessarily known how long it is)
As a user I can see something happening and I don’t think my device froze. a few times I turned it off thinking it was frozen then I had to start exporting again.
Yeah I’m sorry if it looks like I was leaving you guys hanging but it takes a really long time to test these things. One single FX slot with high feedback or one instrument w/ a long release has the potential to create an issue like this.
However, I decided to remove the potential for user error and did 2 song exports using some of the Tracker’s demos and I was able to reproduce this. So I’ll create a Bug Report and link this conversation to it.
