Electrical Noise / Possible USB Whine

Current Situation:

  1. Polyend Synth is off
  2. Connected via headphone out stereo split into two TRS into Digitakt II L and R
  3. Out from Digitakt II into Octatrack MK2

Result: there is an incredible amount of electrical noise from the Polyend Synth. I’ve tried many different combinations of cables and they all net the same result. Other machines don’t create the issue, even when using the same cables to connect.

Not sure if anyone else has come across this issue?

  • This noise only happens when the synth is off?
  • How are you providing power to Synth?
  • Does this occur if the power comes from let say… a powerbank / phone / phone charger

I had this same problem too, feeding a Synth into a Digitone into a Syntakt. No noise when everything is powered up but loud noise from Synth when it’s turned off. For me I was using each unit’s original power supply, and tried with all plugged into the same outlet and the Elektrons plugged into one power strip and the Synth plugged into another. Also got the same loud humming noise from the Synth when I plugged both Elektrons into an Anker power bank.

Sounds to me like a usb shielding issue.
Does the noise change when you touch the device (when powered off)?

(btw i have no noise issues when turned off. i power mine via a 16 port usb-hub, where many other devices are connected at the same time)

  • Yes, the synth has to. be off for this noise to occur
  • Using the power brick and cable provided by Polyend into a surge protected power bar
  • Yes, regardless of how the synth is powered

Then i’m only curious if this causes more or less noise for you guys?

Either way i would say get in contact with polyend’s support or your reseller :muscle:

Yes, even when it’s not plugged in and I touch the device, the sound is reactive. May have to get in touch with Polyend and/or the store.

Thanks for helping to troubleshoot!

well fuck. lol

I just took out the power brick that Polyend sent, and plugged it directly into the USB power port of my power supply and it worked… no more noise. At least one thing is fixed… LOL

Good to know and glad to hear!

Not an electrician or hardware guy at all, but I believe a possibility is that the trick is to connect the Synth to the same wall plug than the rest of your music equipment (via the power port) instead of plugging it directly to a separate wall plug. Regardless of whether you use the Polyend cable or not, which I believe might have nothing to do with this problem.

I’m sure there’s a combination that exists where noise would stop. I thought I found it but it’s back. I thought it was my other gear, but other synths don’t make any noise on or off.

Stil troubleshooting and hopefully I’ll sort it out at some point.

I got a noise with the Synth disconnected as well and was as surprised as you. That was when I got it and started to think where would I plug it for standalone use. Somehow I sorted it out as I was trying combinations. Now I can’t reproduce it anymore, and I don’t remember how I got the noise in the first place. :person_shrugging:

Yeah the issue just popped up out of nowhere and has me troubleshooting all day and night lol. so frustrating, but ill sort it out at some point.

Hi there,

my Polyend Synth produces constant usb whine after triggering any audio from synth - its always like it rings out after triggering audio from synth, so it is just audible while some other sound from Synth is audible - i tried to switch from Power Adaptor to Powerbank and also used different USB Cables -how can this be adressed?

I really cant stand it :frowning:

hey there @lsober, first of all welcome to Backstage!

i’ve merged your topic with this existing one.
Have a look through it for possible solutions and/or things you can try.
Let me know your findings :crossed_fingers:

I’ve checked all the Polyend equipment a thousand times—it’s crystal clear and doesn’t create any noise. Except when you plug a cable into the MIC input or MIDI  Look for the problem in the cables, power supplies, and other equipment. If you plug in headphones directly, do you hear any noise?

It is there - i use k712 directly on phone output and its def audible -

I load Preset DearMrBlake_Typo for example and just make short 1time plucks on the blue arp sound -
on everry 5th to 10th pluck i hear weird electrical whining noise from usb.
You have to listen carefully for it. First i did not notice, but … argh i hate this shielding usb noise sh*.

Why USB was chosen🤷‍♂️

Have you turned off Delay synchronization with tempo?

Hi Sandroid,

ty for your welcome.
I already tried the Stuff mentioned. Different Cables, Power Supply, Wall Plugs.

Its also not Sound Engine Releated :man_shrugging:

Its audible when doing what indescribed, also the volume has to be cranked up max so you can notice it well

You know what else it could be? The headphones themselves might be creating noise. For example, when I touch my metallic Audeze headphones with my hands, noise starts. Maybe try different headphones?
