Disable screen backlight while recording samples to remove device noise

What is the problem?

When normalizing a sample after recording with the built in mic, the device noise is quite obvious
This noise occurs on my device at all screen brightness settings.

What should this feature achieve?

When in sample recording mode, provide the option to disable the device’s internal noise sources (screen backlight) while actively recording.

It has been observed that the screen noise does not occur during the initial startup of the device, only once the startup process has completed and the backlight gets brighter than the initial startup value. A toggle to set the backlight level down to the “startup level” of brightness during recording would provide a usable workaround for those of us that bought the tracker mini because it features a decent on-board microphone, but are frustrated with the device noise.

Are there any workarounds?

Not that still allow use of the internal microphone. It has been suggested in other conversations to change the device brightness. This occurs at all brightness settings on my device.

Hey @chance.s.murray, welcome to Backstage!

This is actually not a fan, but a high pitched noise that can be caused by the screen:

For some this happens when the screen brightness is set to Medium or High. Try changing the brightness to one of the 3 settings and see which one removes the noise.

Let me know if that helps.

While it is definitely louder when set to Medium, I can still hear the noise when set to Low or High. I am adjusting the draft to remove referrences to a “fan” and will call it “screen backlight noise” instead. I also noticed that the during startup, the screen turns on with the logo and the noise only starts once the backlight enables shortly after. This indicates that a function to set the backlight to the initial startup value may cause the noise to disappear fully during recording.

So you hear this noise all the time? Not just during sampling? Sorry, just asking so we have all the details.

All the time, as soon as the device transitions from the boot screen into the project. If it helps, I can try to use my other audio interface and a mic to try to capture it. It is pretty quiet though so trying to capture it externally may be difficult. I’ll see what I can do.

With my new mini I can also hear the noise coming from the device at all brightness settings, but it is quiter when on high brightness. I only hear the noise through headphones when on the Sample Recorder page. It is prominent in mic recordings, it is still audible with line recordings but it seems less of an issue.

If it is not possible to remove the screen noise completely with a firmware update then an option to disable the screen while recording sounds like a good work around to me.

Try this  @chance.s.murray @localrecordings

@liimiited Thank you for the suggestion, but this unfortunately made no difference on my device :disappointed:

I am having the same issue with my tracker mini with high pitched noise at all times when recording via the inbuilt mic. Adjustments to screen brightness unfortunately making no difference! Tested on firmware 2.0 and 2.01
