I recently purchased these three devices used. I had the idea of using them together. The Tracker should serve as the main sequencer. The synth should be triggered by the Tracker via MIDI. At the same time, I also want to be able to play the synth with my fingers and send the notes to the Tracker via MIDI. Finally, I want the playback to run synchronously with some samples and sequences. Has anyone tried this? Do I need an external MIDI thru for this?

This sounds like you definitely want to invest in a midi routing box 
Here is one, cheap, very good and runs on usb power standalone.

I have run all three together seamlessly. I use a midi box and use the Play+ as the controller.

I really like that CME has established itself.
Their products are really well thought out, great price and work as advertised.

This and the support is great. A few mails forth and back and they added a requested midi filter within their constant firmware updates.
