I was hoping to use the 8 buttons to bash out some sequences of chopped breaks but even though I have root note set to C2 w/chromatic scale, when I use the new note input buttons on beat-sliced sample, it just enters C5 onto the sequencer over and over again.
is this by design? Am I being totally dense thinking this would work?

oh cool! i thought maybe it was just my inexperience with the mini and that i was missing something about how the beat slice worked!
note input is still totally awesome and i’m happy enough to wait around to see if this gets fixed.

Yeah the note input mode is working so wonderfully on the Mini, but a couple of people had some WTF moments when going into beat-slice, so just want to reassure you that you’re not alone
