Tracker mini 2.0+ backwards compatibility to OG tracker?

Hello all,

I am a current OG tracker user, and I have been thinking about getting a tracker mini. My most likely use-case would be starting projects on the mini while out and about, and then continuing them on the tracker at home.

I know there is different track counts, stereo sampling, and synth engines on the mini, but let’s pretend I don’t use any of that and just do 8 tracks of standard audio sampling on the tracker mini. In this case, would the tracker mini files be backwards compatible with tracker OG?

And as a bonus question, what would happen if I loaded a FULL tracker mini project (with 16-track data and synth engine stuff) on the tracker OG?

Thanks in advance for the input!

I might give this a try and report back

Hi @jared.0.pollard , although this might work, we do not officially support backwards compatibility from Trackers Mini/Plus going back to Tracker OG. Only forwards compatibility is supported, meaning Tracker OG projects will load correctly on Mini/Plus.

@Sandroid I would love to hear the results if you do!! For science of course

@miropoly understood, thank you for the info.

Alright. so i went ahead and did some testing because my curiosity got the better of me. :joy:

Test Devices:

  • Tracker+ Firmware 1.0.2
  • Mini Firmware 2.0.1
  • OG Tracker Firmware 1.9.0

Results:

  • Bringing a project from the OG to the T+/Mini will work just fine (including the new MIDI Tracks).
  • Any OG project or a new T+/Mini project saved on the T+/Mini will exhibit the following, when you try to open it on the OG:
    • Any steps on Track 1 - 8 will be there (Samples, MIDI and Synths)
    • Stereo samples will play in mono and work just fine
    • Synth steps obviously won’t do anything
    • Anything beyond Track 8 will be lost

As @miropoly mentioned this is NOT officially supported and is purely a test i made out of curiosity. So be aware that once the T+ and Mini evolve further, there may be more things that break in the future, when trying to open a T+/Mini project on the OG.

Thank you so much for testing this out!! Really good to know that the step data for T1-8 would be there at the very least, but definitely hear what you’re saying that this might be firmware-dependent.

Thank you again!
