I’ve been sick for more than one week and I was making a jam live performance in streaming with play+. But since I’ve been sick I didn’t make any music.
My performance is 18 august and I’ve been thinking to make something quick with mini because I can use it at work a little bit.
Instead doom scrolling I can make a little session to compliment the play+ session so I would love to hear your thoughts to make a live jam.
Use one scale with random note and probabilities
Use or performance mode to change pattern for different tracks
use performance effects?? Maybe external effects too…
Hacky way to perform on Tracker Mini that can sound like you’ve practiced:
I’ll basically make 2 or 3 variations of each pattern I want to play. 1 version is the normal one, like the foundation I want to go back to, then I usually add effects/variations on the other 2 on the patterns right next to the foundation pattern. Then I just page back and fourth between them with the +/-. This is really fun for glitch effects, rolls etc. So you can “punch-in” a slightly different pattern. Then when it is time to change sections I use the D-pad to select the next part instead of using song mode.
So as long as your patterns sound good it is kinda impossible to mess this up, and you only have to remember a couble buttons to push (and maybe what patterns you want to go to next). It is a lot of fun to play this way and still feels more like a spontaneous live performance than song playback.
Ohhh I didn’t expected that answer. Very elaborated. I’m going to try that. I didn’t used the performance page and it’s time to test your knowledge on the topic. Thank you @Mitch !!
You make one pattern foundation and 2 or 3 with variations.
My guess is that you change tracks in performance view, but maybe you are saying that you change patterns instantaneously in patient view with the up)down D pad.
Then if you want to change to another section, you use the D pad right/left to queue the next section…
Yeah, I guess I’d call this “easy mode”. I don’t even mess with performance view when doing this, or any other screens beside pattern view.
Hold the pattern button on the pattern screen, and use the little +/- to jump 1 pattern instantly.
So to break it down:
Make a pattern.
Copy the foundational pattern to the next pattern, possibly to the pattern before it too.
So now say you have your foundation pattern on Pattern #10, as you play you can punch in pattern #11, or pattern #9, with the push of a button. Just hold down the top left pattern button and the small +/- buttons to switch.
Design your “effects patterns”. Add variations/rolls/reverb sends/distortion whatever to spice the pattern up. Lots of rolls on a pattern are cool. You could even have say your “glitch pattern” on #9 and then your “time effects” pattern on #11 to transition to the next section.
Then hold pattern and use the D-pad buttons to select the next section, this wont change until the end of the pattern. Also for the effects patterns it always sounds better when the Step length is the same for all variations when using Mini this way.
I use the top row of the performance fx, mapping them out to an external controller to alter tracks on the fly. My keyboard has faders that I use for the fx changes while I play a chosen instrument and jam over top of the song, allowing the fx parameters to generate new grooves and melodic content without having to change the initial layout of the piece in song mode.
I don’t own one but, from the looks of it, I’d say it would work for your needs!
If you haven’t already, check out chapters 11 and 12 in the manual for an overview of the midi and performance mode, specifically 12.8 “Controlling Performances with MIDI” (page 311). That should give you an idea of what you can map out to your faderfox🤘 hope this helps!
