Synth/ Midi Fill, please explain the intended use

Ok, I see other topics loosely related to this, but no information is provided other than telling people "Thanks for your contribution. Unfortunately, the wish doesn’t fit our current product design direction. ". So, please, enlighten me on how fill is supposed to be used on midi or synth channels because it seems unusable to me. When you hit “Fill” it changes all settings to midi jack 1. Does anyone use fill on synth and midi tracks? If so, please explain to me how you use it. What’s your workflow. I would love to know what the intended design direction workflow is for the fill function on the synth/ midi side. I’m not by any means trying to cause static, I just legitimately don’t understand how it is used. Seems to work as I would expect on sample channels, but synth/ midi seems unusable.

You have to set this up in settings since there aren’t dedicated “kick/snare/hat” folders for MIDI. If you go to Settings - Fill config - you can choose from the MIDI channels and synths.

That solves your issue of defaulting to MIDI channel one right?

Hey there @tazillionmillion, it’s a legitimate question and one of the few topics that can cause confusion.

If you press the main encoder and go to Settings → Fill Config, there you can set the MIDI Jack/USB channel or Synth used for each of the Fill Channels.

Hope that brings a bit of clarity to you question :slight_smile:

Thanks Mitch, and again Dan. It was an oversight on the architecture and not fully grasping what the menu was asking of me. I posted this on the other similar topic and will say it here incase it helps anyone else understand better.

It’s an architecture thing.

You have 3 synth slots and 16 midi channels.

You, the operator, know what synth your bass is (be it a midi controlled external, or an internal synth engine), and you know what your lead is; just as the Play knows the structure of sample folders (provided they are labeled correctly).

when filling on a sample channel it pulls from the respective folders as you would expect.

you set in the fill settings what synth slot or midi channel your bass is, or (what threw me off was the) synth, which accounts for cords. and if you use perc then you set that slot for all of the kick, hat, etc. then you set the respective note for perc for the kick, etc.

so, for a set it and forget it example and my new workflow test is;

synth slot 1 = PERC
synth slot 2 = WTFM (lead)
synth slot 3 = ACD (bass)

Fill Settings:
Kick Channel = Synth 1
Kick Note = C4
Snare Channel = Synth 1
Snare Note = D4
HiHat Channe =l Synth 1
HiHat Note = E4
Synth Channel = Synth 2
Bass Channel = Synth 3

And just as a reference for PERC:
Kick Note C4
Tom C0-B3, >=C5
Snare D4
Hat E4-G4
Cymbal A4
Percussion B4

Anyone technical that sees this; any idea if the “templates” can be set up to utilize the additional PERC notes for a fill? I genuinely don’t know anything about the “templates”, how to access them, or how to utilize them. I’ll look after I post this and report back if I find anything.

I realize it doesnt necessarily address other peoples concern with the euclid and random, but at least I feel better now :wink:

Excellent post @tazillionmillion! It’s always nice to have those “A-HA” moments :slight_smile: I really can appreciate that putting synths in a slot labelled Hi Hat for example isn’t fully intuitive. Glad you got it figured out.

Regarding the template, it’s fully possible. You access them in the same spot as the Fill config. Each Fill channel has 2 options;

  1. The Channel the Fill is assigned to
  2. The Note that the Fill is assigned to

For #2, each channel is set to it’s default template but if you select it, then you can assign a specific note to that Fill channel.

Exactly what your scenario is looking for :slight_smile:

For the Toms however, you cannot select a range of notes. You could get some cool results assigning one fill Channel to a note in the middle of the Toms, and using Random+ to generate some Tom grooves.

Hope that answers your question :slight_smile:

Also wanted to reply to this

I think it actually does but the functionality isn’t clear for some. Again, if you put a MIDI channel or Synth on a High Hat then you can use all the Euclid and Random functions.

What I think is confuses people is the difference between the Fill Types and Fill Channels. Chords & Bass / Chords / Bass options are Fill Types that grab from other Fill Channels to do their thing.

Thank you Dan. Sometimes it’s all about how the information is presented. All I know is I’m freaking excited to not have to use my finger drumming text book anymore.
