Just making sure before purchasing…I’m looking for percussion sounds and it looks like several of the Palette offerings will fit the bill. Can those Palette packs be loaded into and used the same way as the factory sounds on the Step?
Thanks in advance…
Yes, it is possible to load other samples onto the Step. It takes a little bit of work, as they need to be pre-arranged in a specific folder/file structure as “kits” on the SD card.
Would they go in like any other kit? Or could you explain? Just got a Step and I downloaded the Tropical palette for some Latin percussion sounds.
Yes, you can make your own kits that will work like the ones that come from factory. I don’t have my Step at hand, but have a look at the content of the SD card and how things are structured. It will hopefully be enough to understand how files should be placed in a specific folder structure in order to make your own kits.
Sebastian added a video in the topic “copying songs on step” which shows how to delete patterns and songs as well as add new kits.

thanks for this video!
For packs coming out in the future we will add a separate Step “kit” folder, right now only last month’s free pack - Fractured does have a Step drum kit already organized. We give away a free pack for one week only every month via the email list if you don’t know about it!
It looks like Acoustic LoFi Palette has some kits already organized? Are those also compatible with step?
I was able to build a kit from the Festival palette but it was time consuming to do so. Sounds good though.
I don’t believe the acoustic LoFi Palette has drum kits for step organized already.
So the Festival palette — will Polyend ever go back and set it up for Step kits? or is that on the user? I ask bc I’m surprised how fiddly it is to work with some things on step and/or computer, and how little that is discussed in the online manual, and how few of the (otherwise excellent) factory kits have percussion. happy to pay for some shakers etc., but I’d rather not pay and then lose a day trying to organize the samples. Def not a Festival!
Mitch (or someone from Polyend)!
Follow on my above msg with a small request:
Please let us know about the file management process for adding Palettes in kit into the Step…
Thank you.
Heya, sorry, but the only way to do it now is to upload the kits into separate folders. I have an empty template you can use - attached. Easiest way to do it is just populate the empty kit with samples in all folders for “track 1-4”. If a track folder is empty it will not load the whole pack. For future palettes - there will be a separate step folder already organized - but not on currently existing palettes.
KitTemplate.zip (43 KB)
Just rename the “kitTemplate” folder whatever you want your kit to be called, if you want more drum sounds in it just copy one of the empty folders 1-8 and rename it 9, 10, etc.
Big thanks Mitch for doing this, saves me a chunk of time
Took me about an hour to create 15 different versions of Festval kits with four sounds in each folder. They do sound nice.
Thanks Mitch! Will attempt this method…also thanks JDub – going to follow your plan of action on this…
