Since the Play/+ and Tracker/+ use mechanical keys, it’d be fairly simple to swap the keycaps for custom colored ones! Doing a little bit of research, I found out that Kailh Choc brown switches are used—it doesn’t seem like they’re low profile, but I’m a noob regarding mechanical keyboards, so I’m not sure. See these pictures of the switch and cap from my Play+ (pardon the debris, these were taken for my own reference before I decided to post them here):
So, the question is: Where can I find more keycaps that match the dimensions, profile, and switch stem that Polyend uses? Does Polyend source these from a third-party manufacturer, who might offer additional colors? I’d love to see some transparent purple, blue, or neon green on my Play+!
I just compared a cap from my Play+ with one I believe is a “standard” Kalih Choc cap, and the one from Play+ is smaller (about 15x15mm vs. about 16.5x16.5 mm), but deeper. So it might be hard to find replacements that will fit.
Hey @brandon.haberkost, i’ve gotten some infos directly from Polyend on this.
The caps are a custom design created by Polyend that they keep to themselfs for now.
So you won’t find generic caps for it.
If you ever need replacement caps, feel free to contact customer support directly and they will gladly help ya.
On the more experimental side: i’ve so far seen one person actually replacing the keyswitches for their Play with cherry switches so that they could have more options for keycaps. I guess reverse engineering the caps for 3d printing would be an option as well.
Thanks, y’all! Definitely good information here. I was scouring the net for hours trying to find an exact match for these keycaps, so it’s good to know I can put that to rest now. I’m pretty handy with a soldering iron, so replacing the switch is an option on the table. I’m just not sure i’d want to perform surgery on my beloved Play+ just yet while everything is working perfectly. Maybe one day if something goes wrong with it and I have a real reason to open it up. Resin casting or, like you said, 3d printing might be an option too. In the meantime, maybe I’ll buy some random keycaps that seem like they’ll fit the hole and go from there.
