Select only one column (all steps)

On Tracker, is there a keyboard shortcut to select all the steps in a single column (so notes, instruments, FX1 or FX2)? I use shift-up in record mode when on step 1 (decimal mode from 1) all the time to select everything in a track but want to be able to do something similar to select all the steps for a single column for the purpose of copy/paste.

This could possibly be implemented as after selecting all/some steps in a track in rec mode, holding shift and pressing note, instrument, FX1 and/or FX2 to select them for copying. This could also lead to some interesting ways to mangle tracks, by using the big knob to increment the selected values all at once. I noticed that if you hold the colored buttons it’s related menu pops up, but does not if shift is held. Perhaps a config menu item to enable or disable step attribute multiselect as a nice to have.

Agree with all of that - would be so handy, because as it stands at the moment (as far as I know, hence the original post of course) I can’t work with steps only at the note/instr/FX1-2 level when copying/pasting or editing, it’s the entire track or not at all.

To reiterate my question though, is there a way to do this or are we looking at a feature request for future implementation?

Its already implemented but probably nobody knows😄

Copy only effects:

Do copy as usual, select range, press copy.
It copies note, instr, eff1 and eff2 into the buffer.

Now press shift+eff(1,2)+paste.
Only effects will be pasted.

It also works with instruments, empty steps will be filled with the currently selected instrument.

It will not work for notes only.

Tips& Tricks category anyone?

That’s really helpful Patrick - many thanks for that.

The ability to copy paste is great (but why not notes I wonder?), but the other thing I wanted to be able to do with the column selection technique was to select then clear a single column, leaving the others intact, which from what I can infer from your post doesn’t seem possible? Is it?

Let me try to explain:

  1. You can copy and paste all columns (n,i, e1,e2)
  2. You can paste the effect column only (e1,e2)
  3. You can not paste instruments or notes only because they must always be together, try entering a note or an instrument. It always writes both into the steps.
  4. You can paste note+instrument only without effects.
  5. You can delete fx only, go to the e1 or e2 column and press del.
  6. When you delete note or instrument, as they belong together, the whole step is deleted.

So hopefully it makes sense, the devs had a good thought on that.

OK, that’s plenty for me to be exploring. I’m away from the Tracker right now but will walk myself through all of the possibilities you’ve outlined.

Thanks again for taking time to share this info - much appreciated.

Just worked my way through this and I’ve had the ‘lightbulb going on over my head’ moment as I understood how this works. Can’t believe that I hadn’t understood the relationship between note and instrument, it’s so clear now. Too long with DAWs seeing tracks and instruments in that context that the tracker way didn’t compute, but it sure does now.

Many thanks again Patrick - a proper eye-opener for me.
