So… exporting song stems somehow failed, resulting in a non-responsive Tracker Plus. The only remedy I could think of was just pulling the power cord, but now the SD card looks to be reformatted. I thought I had a backup of at most a couple weeks back, but no. Tons of songs lost, no one to blame except for myself.
Anyone of you ever had any luck recovering the contents of a lost SD card?
TestDisk can be used to recover lost partitions, fix boot sectors, and recover files from damaged or deleted file systems. It is mainly used to recover data from hard drives, but it can also work with other storage devices such as USB drives and memory cards. It supports a wide variety of file systems, including NTFS, exFAT, FAT, ext2, ext3, and ext4.
PhotoRec is designed to recover lost files, including photos, videos, and music files, from various types of storage devices. It can recover files from hard drives, memory cards, and USB drives, and it can also recover files from digital cameras and other portable devices.
Both live on cgsecurity.org and are Open Source software.
Thanks a lot for your support! I did manage to regain some files, but in such an unstructured form that I’m unable to recreate the Tracker’s project structure from them. Also, most of the samples that are found within the retrieved file structure are warped, so I’m afraid the project and pattern files might also be corrupted. And of course, out of all the precious files that are now lost, the only ones that I did regain are some of the most bland and boring sample packs that I ever stored on my Tracker.
I do still have some multitrack recordings of most of the songs, so I’ll just take this loss as a very valuable lesson to regularly back up, and start recreating the songs as best I can.
I’m very happy to report that in the end I did manage to recover quite a lot of files that I thought were lost forever, some of which are the most valuable to me.
It took quite a lot of time and effort, which I suppose is the price I have to pay for having been so careless. So having gone through this whole ordeal first hand, don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you want to know more about what I did exactly, of if you need assistance in trying to retrieve lost files yourself.
But the best thing to do is try your best to prevent this from happening, by BACKING UP REGULARLY. I can’t stress this enough: your own creations are the most valuable thing, you need to treat them as such.
Much remains lost, there’s no way around it. Especially the lost directory structure can’t be rebuilt as far as I know, and since Tracker projects are essentially an organization of files and folders, there’s no way to easily reinstate full projects. But what turned out to be a gift from Jesus himself is that the .mtp pattern files are pretty self-contained, so as long as they follow the Tracker’s naming conventions, they can just be loaded into any project and ran on the Tracker. Samples that are included within these patterns will be lost until the recovered .pti files are manually reassigned to the projects, but the most important thing to me right now is finding the song structures, which are all contained within the patterns.
It has been a quite stressful experience, I have to admit. The past few weeks I spent a lot of time doing nothing but damage control, and I wasn’t capable of doing even the most insignificant creative effort. Now that most of the songs I lost are safe, I might even start thinking about building a few ideas into new songs.
