What is the problem?
I only recently found out about how the Group With Last (GWL) chance parameter works. I like it and I think it opens up a lot of fun generative options. However, I feel this concept doesn’t go far enough in offering fun generative possibilities. It is good for allowing conditional sections within a single track with notes played in that same track. What if the triggering note could be defined by the user instead of just being a fixed point? I also think it should be renamed because if I didn’t look it up online, I would have never figured out what it did as it doesn’t appear to do anything different unless you’ve set up Chance on the preceding note.
What should this feature achieve?
This would allow more elaborate generative sequencing possibilities by allowing notes and sections in tracks to be triggered by things that happen outside of the track itself.
How GWL currently works:
Track 1 [ ] [ ] [ 1 ] [ 1.] [ ]
Note “1.” checks to see if note “1” played, and if it did, then it will also play
How this new feature would work:
Track 1 [ ] [ 1 ] [ ] [ ] [ ]
Track 2 [ ] [ ] [ ] [ 1.] [ 2.]
Track 3 [ 2 ] [ ] [ ] [ ] [ ]
Both labelled notes in track 2 are using this proposed feature. The note marked “1.” is using the note in track 1 as the trigger. The same is true for notes “2.” and “2”
I think the trigger note could be either set manually on the screen by the user picking the track and step number. I think there could also be a shortcut feature where the pad for the trigger note could be pressed by the user while on the chance screen with the feature as the active one.
Maybe if the triggering note could be illuminated with a color or something that would make it more apparent to the user. This would be especially true if this is expanded like how I am suggesting.
Are there any workarounds?
There are not.
