A few months ago I tried to recreate Uncharted Worlds by Sam Hulick (also known as “the galaxy map song” in Mass Effect) on the tracker using only the onboard synths. I used mostly available patches, and rendered to samples when needed to free up synths.
S1 was used to record different patches to samples. S2 and S3 were used (reserved?
) for the bass and the flute, I figured it would be nice to have some extra motion on these sounds.
Most of it is pieced together from an excellent breakdown/analysis of the song I found on YouTube by Music Design (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5vqUX5pa3g). It was really helpful especially because I’m not great at finding the notes by hear but also to find appropriate patches.
I think I got pretty far using only the onboard patches and single send for reverb (unlike in the video I can’t stack multiple reverb on some of the tracks, but maybe that’s not such a bad thing).
In the end I’m pretty satisfied with how it turned out, it’s not that close to the original but I learned a lot. There’s definitely room to improve many aspects. Especially the mixing, but I think tweaking the reverb, delays, patches and adding some FX to play with velocity, micro timing and such would make a difference. Once I learn more tricks I might get back to it and do a new version but for now I’ll let it be and move on.

Feedback welcome, I’d love to hear if you have tips or recommendations especially on the mixing/balancing of the different tracks and sounds. Or if you tweak the project a bit and want to share it back I’d love to hear the difference.
