Why don’t your guys release an open source firmware for Tracker Mini where people can program their own experimental features? it would help you with development and keep the tracker alive forever in our hearts
This topic has popped up quite a few times and they decided against it.
Heres some discussion if you’d like to read about it
You can find more searching for “open source” at the top of the forum. Hope this helps!
if i remember correctly the main issue was significant overlap between the OS of current polyend devices (not just trackerOG/tracker+)
but even ignoring that - opening up (formerly) commercial software is not trivial, comes with many new burdens. in my opinion the most relevant ones are:
- reviewing/merging pull requests (made by “naive” devs new to the project)
- maintaining documentation (or even rewriting existing doc to make it legible to outsiders)
- licensing problems (one lib with the “wrong” license type could necessitate a rewrite)
there are almost certainly less than 10 devs working on the tracker(s), probably even fewer are proficient enough in the firmware side of things to make good/sustainable decisions when judging PRs. letting the community maintian their own branch independently would only sidestep some of the challenges and exacerbate others.
i love the idea of opening up parts of the firmware via some kind of limited API - for adding/changing features without the need to expose any of the source code - but that’s just another can of worms and would freeze feature development for possibly a long time.
don’t think i’ve read a statement on that possiblity, though
