Hey @kevinmicklewright, welcome to Backstage! 
The Synth’s sequencer is pretty basic, it doesn’t allow holding notes past one step.
You can however add rests by pressing Shift and get a slightly longer note by increasing the Gate length above 100%.
There is a feature request that (i think) includes a wish for this:
