Midi sync issues with Protools

Hi folks, Old man noob here.

Loving my Play!!! But I’m having a few issues getting it to sync whith Protools as the master (midi via Motu Microlite).

Play often drops the first beat in the pattern when pressing play/record in Protools

Audio from play is not on the grid and the amount by which it is off is different each time I press play/record.

If I press stop in protools, the Play stops but if I go back to song start and press play in protools the Play starts the pattern wherever it was when it was stopped, not the start of the pattern

Any help is appreciated!

Hey Jason, welcome to Backstage!

I’m going to assume that you are sending MIDI out from your Microlite to the MIDI Jack input on the Play. Could you confirm that your Play has both the Clock In and Transport In set to MIDI In Jack please?

I can confirm that, yep. Using the trsb adapter that came with the Play.

I had similar issues setting it up with midi over USB as well. Could be protools settings I suppose but I have other drum machines that don’t do this.

Mind you… I still love the Play. It’s a brilliant instrument!

Hey @james.pertusi, also a warm welcome from my side

I’ve had similar issues in the past in Bitwig. What work best for me is to start tracks with an empty bar in the DAW, to circumvent any sync issues.

By the time it reaches the next bar everything should have synced up and then play correctly, which then makes recording the Play into the DAW pretty easy.

Maybe this small workaround will help you too :hugs:

Thanks Sandroid, how to I get the Play to not play untill the second bar? Or do you mean just I should just expect to delete the first bar of audio?

I’m also going to explore the export feature a bit.

OK just another clue or two here maybe?

Clue 1

When the Play is standalone, not synced to anything, pressing play always starts the pattern at step one.

When synced to protools pressing play in protools seems to start the pattern from whatever step was played last.

It was suggested that I select the pattern each tine before I press play in protools but this does nothing. Same issue.

Clue 2

When synced with protools, the play does play at the correct tempo (120bpm in this case) but the display says 110bpm

When the Play standalone, with internal tempo set to 120bpm, it plays at some other bpm (it drifts from the protools 120bpm click

OK, sorry to answer my own questions, but maybe this will help somebody with similar issues.

In order to get the audio from the Play to synch with the grid when using Protools as the MTC/Transport master I need to do a few things.

On the Play I need to press play/stop twice. The first time illuminates (orange) all the buttons corresponding to step one of the current pattern. The second time… ehhh… UNilluminates them. This seems to reset the pattern to step one.

If I now press play or record in Protools the audio is synced to the click.

However, doing this still Drops the audio of step one.

If I add a measure or of preroll in Protools it solves this problem which is OK as I’m just looping one pattern. If you have a whole song (chain) I guess the first pattern would need to be blank so you don’t lose the measure of Audio that is playing during preroll.

I have sorted most of it out.

I have reloaded the most current firmware and this seems to have fixed two things:

  • The Play displays the correct BPM when synced with protools
  • The Audio seems to be better aligned with the grid

The only problem left really is that when I press Record or Play in protools, The Polyend Play does not play audio stored in Step 1 of the pattern.

I can solve this by adding a measure of pre-roll to protools but then I get the sample/echo/reverb tails at the start of the audio file as the Play has been playing audio during preroll.

Technically, the Play is still skipping step one Audio in this scenario, it’s just doing it during the one measure of preroll.
