"Kit loading failed" + encoder + start issues

Hello there!

I’ve not used my STEP a lot since the last update, and this is what I’ve experienced today:

  • “song” encoder not responding 100% of the time ;
  • “Kit loading failed” when I try to load my own kits, but not every time = tweaking to the next and previous kit seems to unlock the loading + trying new “New song” works after some tests ;
  • hardest part : for the first time, the device wouldn’t turn on multiple times. It only showed a still yellow light under the “Effect” button.

No changes on the alim, input or outup. Pedal reset done. Kits erased and reloaded on the SD card.

Will my device explode?

Please help :sob:

Thx

Hi there,

could be a faulty SD card.
How are you powering the pedal?

Thanks for your quick reply!

I have the Canvas Power 8 from Walrus Audio. Same power supply since the beginning.

When I had powering issues (with a strymon one) both Mess and Step failed to work. This time, the Mess is ok when the Step fails. And it’s my setup since few months.

I will copy the SD card to another an see what happens.

Hey,

The Song button is still whimsical.
The Kit loading failed is still there BUT, I’ve noticed this only happens when I make changes to an existing (unlocked) song from the preset bank or a new but empty song (unlocked). However, it works with empty slots.

So here’s the plot:
Considering there is no differences between a very new and completely blank New Song and an Empty slot, why don’t my kits load the same way in these two cases?

I may have missed one thing. When you say “your kits” you mean ones that you created yourself?

  • Do they follow the required folder structure?
  • Does each “track” folder in a kit, contain a sample?
    • as in: Folder/1/Track1/ to Folder/1/Track4/ all contain a .wav file

Yes sir! Exactly!

To be precise: the folder – let’s say B – (with its architecture) is a copy of the previous folder (A) containing another Kit I’ve created.

The Folder A works fine. It was created before the update. The folder B is… you know, whimsical.

So each Track{X} folder contains a sample?
Also.. i know you said you haven’t used it for a while.. but is it possible that maybe some of the samples from that B folder may be weird (filename, fileformat)?

Hm… not all folder contain a sample.
Do you think it may cause some trouble?

Concerning the format or filename, there’s no strange thing, only text with space, e.g. “shoe.wav” 16bit mono 44100khz

yeah i think that might cause the issue. Could you give a try and add samples to the folders that don’t contain one?

I come back tomorrow with the response!
Have a good day or evening.

Thank you for your help!

I’m happy to announce that Mr. Sandroid correctly identified the problem and provided the right solution: It’s essential to fill in each “Track” folders with a sample.

In my case, I only needed 2 samples out of the 4 possible ones.
This highlights even more the importance of a mute option.

Thanks, Mr. @Sandroid

P.S. My Song encoder is still a bit less responsive than before. I think it is a mechanical issue…
P.P.S. Let’s see if the starting issues were 1/100000 or if it happens more often…

Glad we figured it out together :hugs:

If the encoder issue is something serious, feel free to contact support.
I’m sure they gladly will help you out.
