A really good video would be nice. The superbooth ones are ok but also noisy and distracting on a lot of them etc. The launch ones are ok but just seems like some better ones would be nice
Can’t wait to see more!
Congratulations!
I would be happy if the MESS tutorial video had a setting to make it look like Chase Bliss MOOD, Bastl THYME+
Essentials guide online.
The Essentials guide looks great.
Any idea when a list of effect parameters might be published, or a list of parameters can be either (1) synced to clock or (2) synced to sequence for each effect?
2-3 parameters can be sequenced per effect, they vary per submode too so some delays may have time subdivisions, others filters and feedback, reverbs have 2 parameters to sequence. Sync to tap tempo or clock is availble for microloopers and delays (there are unsynced ones), tremolo, panning.
Guys, has anyone used MESS in a live setup? How good is it as a multi-effect processor for drum machines and synths? I have an Analog Heat, but I really don’t like its sound or workflow organization, so I’m considering Mess as a new ultimate solution for quickly processing synths and drum machines.
What can you say about it what are its pros and cons?
First batch has to be shipped out yet, so answers will follow soon😊
I got mine, I usually don’t post about gear but here we go!
My opinion is, the effects are of good quality, UI feels great, lots of possibilities!
Things to improve:
When synced to external gear for clock and transport the sequencer activates after a full bar. Synced via usb, ik still waiting for midi type b cable.
Especially the microlooper starts playing at random until the first p locks triggers. Very annoying but can be fixed with a firmware update. This is only with external clock and transport.
Gain structure is very precise. Learn the gain and mix knobs. These make a huge difference. The saturator/overdrive etc need a lot of gain to get ‘dirty’, otherwise it’s a very subtle effect.
This is not a punch in and punch out machine, more like a set and forget machine. You can’t mute fx’s on the go.
The mix and gain knob in the middle of the 6 knobs is kind of weird. Countless times I want to change a parameter and twist the gain or mix knob.
It takes some time to learn the device too, it’s not and ordinaire multifx unit.
I almost send it back to the distributor but after learning the UI and gain structure I plan on keeping it. It brings something different, especially with the sequencer. An LFO would be nice but you can use it with external cc controller. (Still waiting on my midi type b cable)
Hope this helps
Hi @stefan.kuster welcome to the community!
Thanks a lot for your input! I am also enjoying MESS, you can do loads of stuff with it.
That’s not what i experienced here. MESS always starts in sync at the first step. It is more likely that your other device is sending continue and no start/reset via transport. Also microlooper does work correctly then.
Gain structure is indeed very important. For all my presets i have a clear layout. Mix knob always 100% and then gain staging and dry/wet per effect slot. This way i can switch between presets and always retain the intended effect behaviour.
This would make a great feature request! I second this, muting slots would be nice.
Hi Patrick! Thanks for your reply.
I’m hoping the clock transport issue will be better with a midi type b cable. I was trying to figure stuff out with my op1f field when sending clock and transport but nothing thussfar tackled it.
When I receive the proper midi cable I will try it with digitakt 2 so fingers crossed!
Again, Thanks for the reply
Hi Patrick, recieved a midi cable type b today. Still, when activated from external machine (Digitakt 2) the microlooper immediately starts until it reaches a selected p locks. After that it acts normal.
I know for certain that my setting in the digi and mess are correct. Hope they will fix this in an update.
Thanks again!
Same here: MIX at 100% and level different engines in the engine itself. And mute buttons are most welcome indeed! I did put my wishes in the Feature request category, now Im hoping for votes, so Polyend will commit them in the new firmware.
The granular engine and wavetable engine on the trackers is pretty much useless.
Plus they need a bunch of features and bug fixes.
Kinda annoying.
Not sure if this is the right thread to ask but here goes:
I’m considering getting a multi-fx pedal and MESS is an obvious contender so I have a few questions that might help make a decision:
- Can the inputs handle hotter/eurorack levels?
- Can it be synced with analog clock/triggers (maybe through the expression pedal input)?
- Can it be used in a dual mono setup or is it strictly mono/stereo in → stereo out?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.
I would watch some Youtube vids on how people are using those Engines. They might feel that way to someone who is still learning, but especially the wavetable engine gets lots of love here.
I would agree tho that I prefer a more “granular” Granular engine, but it can still pull off some pretty neat tricks! ![]()
You have only Line level and High Z levels, so you’d want to bring your Euro levels to Line first.
I don’t think so. I just got it today, so I’m still learning but I don’t think it’s the intention given the single 1/4 inch Stereo Input which would take a bit more messing around of bringing 2 mono devices into that Stereo input.
With that said, I still think this would be a killer Feature Request if it’s not possible.
Good question. Wish I could answer that one for you, but I would just be guessing. Seems there are not many great solutions to convert analog clock to MIDI, which is a shame.
I hope we see some more love soon for MESS. More effects and more parameters per effect would be cool and randomize parameters in each track would be great for every effect and randomize preset routing option etc.
Man this Polyend MESS is a lot of fun. I love the screen on MESS as it makes things easier to get around especially compared to ZOIA. MESS is pretty easy to get around and allows for quick layering of steps on the 16-step sequencer, and then adding p-locks with certain parameters. Then you can switch the order of the 4 effects super fast. On top of that you have series, dual parallel, parallel to change the tonal characters etc. It’s pretty fast and simple to get something fun going without having to be a genius like you do with ZOIA haha. Also the FX chain randomizer is awesome.
Hopefully we can see randomizing of parameters sometime soon and LFO’s, and would like to see a few more routing options like 1-into-3 parallel and 3 parallel into 1 etc.. and also allow for the routing options to be randomized along with the fx chain randomization etc. Also hopefully they fix it where the steps stay on the sequencer when changing effects or when using the fx chain randomization.
I’m loving it!
I’d love to see some more effects like ring modulator please.
Also what about combo delays/reverbs? Give us a few delay / reverb options that way we can have both in one track only, and give us some option inside those to route delay → reverb or reverb → delay etc.
Also what about some guitar / bass synth options! Even if it’s monophonic!
Adding this here as well.
Please Polyend, quit limiting the Tempo lol. I wanna go slower than 30. Please let us go down to at least 10 although I’d prefer to go between 1 and 400. Some of us like really slow and dragged on tempo for ambient and experimental things!
