How to organize new Palette-Samples on the SD-Card?

Hi,

I’m new to the PLAY (+). I coudn’t find a answer to my questions in Google or here in the forum, not even in similar threads.

So I have just purchased 5 (!) of the Palletes Sample Packs (Atmo, Aurora, Lucid, Harmonic Horizons, Parallax) as I am more on the soft, chilling ambient music side.

So, how do I organize all my new samples on the SD-Card to get the best out of it, in terms of overview, accessibility, and integration with the functionality (algorhythms) of the PLAY?

As the PLAY has only the folders:
“Kick”/“Snare”/“Hat”/“Bass”/“Synth” - and the different algorhythms of the PLAY treat the contents of these five folders individual, right?

But the Palette “Aurora” e.g. has different folders namend:
“pads and drons”/“plucks”/“bass”/“lead”/“percussion”

So, how do I get the new named folders (their content) in the PLAY? Which folders in which folder? New folder names? Just the wav-files? Will the algorhythms of the PLAY still be working with the new samples?

And could/should I create my one folders to tell apart in which of my purchased Pallete I’m in?

So, is it about moving the hole folders to the SD-Card, or just the wav-files in the five above mentioned “root” folders?

Questions over questions - hope you can help.

Thanks!

First I would recommend giving a good read to chapter 5.3 on page 78 of the manual. This explains the necessities and limitations in creating a sample pack.

for clarity, I’m using Italics for content from Palettes and bold for content in the Sample Pack
It’s a matter of creating and renaming folders plus moving some files around. I have a template for creating sample packs which is a folder called “Template” and then subfolders inside with the names needed for the sample packs (Kick, Snare, etc). When I want to create a new sample pack, I copy this template, and then name the main folder to like “Aurora” in your example. Continuing with your example, I’d move the files in “pads and drones”, “plucks” and “lead” to the Synth folder, bass I would move the files to Bass. Finally I’d go in the Percussion folder and move the kick drums to Kick, snares to Snare and the HiHats to Hats
Keep in mind the limits explained in the manual.

Another question came up:

As I understand, the folder names Kick, Snare, Hihat and Bass are especially functioning with the algorhythms, right?
What in this matter is about the folder name Synth?

I am asking, because I noticed that some of the ambient pallete packs don’t contain any percussion like stuff at all. Only melodic like samples.

So, if I put all of them - about 100 (!) samples - in the Synth folder, the overview, when working with that sample pack, would be really bad.

So I guess, I would need to create new folder names to access a better overview.

As I saw on YouTube some users don’t seem to care about the recommended folder names and create new folder names. I suppose sacrificing any of the algorhythm funktionality, right?

As I understand the manual, the created folder names can be much longer, to tag them with your one “words”, they only have to contain the recommended names, right?

So that could be a good solution to the problem…?

The Synth folders are used for the Melodic and Chord Fills.

Yeah 100 is a lot. I try to limit between 20-30. When Convert Palettes to sample packs, I’ll make Aurora01, Aurora02 etc if needed.

Thats correct. At that point, you can place Palettes straight into the Sample folder and use them as normal samples.
