Yes the Play can absolutely do this. After setting up your desired scale in the main menu, select the track(s) you want to record to. Then tap View to bring up the keyboard on the pads, Press Live Rec on the button under the screen and then Jam away! 
Awesome! And i guess it can also quantize the thing that you live recorded if you choose to?
Are we talking quantizing the scale or the timing of the recorded notes?
The timing of the recorded notes. If you play a little off beat but then it gets corrected
Yep! In the Main menu you can turn on/off Quantize recording
