Best Midi keyboard IOS App for Tracker Mini?

Hi all, just taken delivery of a Tracker Mini and loving it, had reservations the lack of jog wheel and keys would make the workflow difficult but it doesn’t and the note feature is a brilliant addition. That said I want to connect either my iPhone or iPad up to it and use as a midi keyboard so looking for recommendations for the best IOS app to do this? Both Apple devices are USB-C so assume I don’t need a converter and can go straight USB-C to USB-C? Sorry it’s a bit of a basic question and all but searches don’t seem to give a definitive answer.

Hello and welcome!

Good question, I usually if I want a keyboard I’ll use my Roland S-1 (with a midi TRS crossover cable) but I will try with the iPad with some of the apps I have and see which ones work well.

Without having tried I would say if AUM works that’s a nice versatile app. Maybe Audiobus works too. Some of the sequencers might also be interesting, and I now wonder what an MPE like keyboard would do  I’ll report after doing some tests.

I seem to have hit a config issue, I can’t seem to have it show up as connected on the iPad. I’m trying with an iPad mini (a new one with USB-C), if I plugin a synth it shows up but I’ve fiddled with various settings on the Tracker Mini but no luck.

Maybe @Sandroid has a hint? I know he’s posted screenshots in the past with AUM I the past. Is there a trick on the tracker or on iOS?

Sidenote: If I’m not mistaken Audiobus is free currently on the app store, it doesn’t have a keyboard but you should be able to route a keyboard from another app through it, so it’s probably worth grabbing

There’s a video here showing it with AUM in a thread already:

If I get it working I’ll try some of the other apps with keyboard inside of AUM and try to post some screenshots/feedback.

I found the IOS Kbds troublesome, need a new phone with USB-C maybe?

Any way… I got

the Korg Nanokey, and with the MIDI crossover cable it’s genius in small spaces, like an airplane seat tray!

The nanokey fold seems to be perfect for the Tracker Mini. Shame there aren’t more portable keyboards with TRS Midi connection.

Make yourself a trs to rts cable and you’re really portable

Though i think they missed the mark because you still need an usb power supply. An included battery would be killer

Going slightly off topic, but I think the Roland S-1 might also be worth considering. It has two octaves, a MIDI TRS out, arpeggiator, and built in battery. And it’s also a powerful synth! And the price is not much more than the nanokey fold.

did consider getting something like the nanokey but you’re right for £50 more you can have this!

Indeed! I think it would be great if there were a £50~60 battery powered midi keyboard with a TRS port as a portable option. But yeah it seems the S1 is better value for money than a nanokey fold. Alternatively there’s the Korg Volca FM2 which is the only Volca that has midi out built in afaik. Again powerful synth engine, 2 octaves, arpeggiator, although the keyboard is a touchstrip rather than buttons.

I restarted my iPad last night and then it all worked. I tested the builtin keyboard in AUM (as per the link above). As well as Salome (technically an MPE looper/sampler), that worked great and I was able to get velocity from it  (which I can’t do from the S1).

With velocity enabled on the tracker I was able to get the note velocity in no problem (low on the bottom of the key button, and high on top). Here’s what it looked like:

The rest of the data (aftertouch, …) was as I expected ignored.

I didn’t try with Moog Mariana which has a similar keyboard, but it would probably end up sucking too much battery to use it only for the keyboard.

Some other ideas (I don’t have these apps so I can’t say how well they work):

A dedicated keyboard app would probably be even better (save more screen space). For me Salome will do for now since I have it already
