I’m exploring a hardware modification project and wanted to get some insights from the experts and experienced modders here on the forum.
I really love the digital sound engine, synth architecture, controls, and audio I/O on the Polyend Synth, but for my personal setup, I prefer using a dedicated external MIDI controller. I’m considering the idea of rehousing the core components into a smaller, standalone desktop enclosure by removing or decoupling the built-in touch grid module.
If anyone from the Polyend team or the DIY community has experience with the internal layout of the Synth—or has attempted a similar rehousing project—I’d really appreciate your thoughts, warnings, or advice!
BTW if it’s the worst idea ever, also please let me know
Interesting idea. Your main risk is that it would void your warranty if it is damaged; I just want you to be aware of that, but the layout itself is 2 boards, and 1 is just the grid pad control board, so in theory you could do it. I don’t know if firmware requires the control board connection to boot, though, never tried it.
That sounds promising. Thanks for letting me know. I’m fully aware of the warranty issue. I would try to move the main board to another case. However, the crucial part is about the control board connection you’ve mentioned. Without this knowledge trying is risky
i mean, worst that can happen is that it doesn’t boot properly i guess?
Just opening up the enclosure and seeing what happens when you try to boot the device without the control board connected, shouldn’t do any harm. if it doesn’t boot properly.. just put things back into place and close it back up
but i totally understand if you think that is too risky to try
I checked, and the primary developer doesn’t believe it will boot without the control board connected. It wouldn’t brick the device if disconnected, just require the control board to be reconnected.
@Mitch thanks for checking this out. That explains the initial idea. How about changing this logic via firmware update - is it possible? Theoretical question
