What is the problem?
The Play and Play+ design philosophy is to allow note settings (effects, pitch, sample, etc.) per note. But this is very, very bad when recording into the Play/Play+ from MIDI. Let’s say I have a step-sequenced bass track and 4 polyphonic synth tracks. Even if I have previously recorded a bit into the synth tracks (as synth), if I edit the bass track, then as soon as I start recording over MIDI into the synth tracks, they’re recorded as bass. And if I delete everything in those tracks, they are reset to initial settings when I next record into them (meaning sample #0). Similarly if I delete all tracks, they’re all reset to initial settings: I can’t make a template.
This is really, really bad behavior.
But it would be easy to fix: create a setting option where I can optionally have default per-track settings, at least for MIDI input. When I select a track, I can change its settings. Now when I enter MIDI notes into that track, they use those default settings even if I change settings in other tracks. Even if I delete all the notes in the track, those settings are still retained.
What should this feature achieve?
MIDI is not like pressing buttons on the grid. It is a time sequence and is often entered repeatedly, erased, and redone. At present the Play’s MIDI handling is rudimentary and surprisingly poor. But making this tweak alone would dramatically improve it.
