Bug - Tracker/+/Mini - Audio Input Reverb Threshold Problem

Tracker/+/Mini - Audio Input Reverb Threshold Problem

The problem is that reverb is not applied to external audio in the same way it is to internal audio. Basically, with external audio you feed into the Tracker/+/Mini, the reverb will only engage if a certain threshold is met. This means that if your external audio varies in volume, you get this very inconsistent, lumpy and boomy reverb. This makes it very hard to keep levels where you want. It wouldn’t be so bad if it was a smooth engage of the reverb, but it’s very on/off.

I don’t always notice this problem as bad on some projects as others and I think that’s basically due to the variations in external sounds I’m using and possibly their frequencies? It’s particularly noticeable with field recordings, where the sound is going to be less prominent.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Create a project with a strong reverb effect
  2. In the reverb settings set the external audio to send plenty to reverb
  3. Play some external audio through the reverb that either varies in volume, or manually vary the volume of the external source yourself. You could try a field recording as an example of a less prominent sound.

Occurrence / Frequency

Happens always

Found in Firmware

This happens in all firmwares Tracker/+/Mini firmwares I have tried, but to list the current one I’m noticing it with on the Mini:

  • Version: 2.1.0 beta 1
  • Build: 1153

Possible Workarounds

Creatively limiting, but basically you can ensure that your external audio source is consistently loud enough to keep the reverb engaged and does not fade up and down in volume.
Avoid field recordings? :disappointed:

Fix

Make it work the same as internal audio? Or if this is not possible, make it smoother and less on/off.
