What is the problem?
The grid pad is woefully underutilized. At present it is little more than a bad replacement for the jog wheel in most scenarios. There are a few rare examples of cleverness, such as its use for punch-in parameters in perform mode. But that’s all.
I greatly miss the ability to use the grid pad to enter steps, even if in a limited fashion.
What should this feature achieve?
Imagine that instead of being a parameter value entry mechanism while in Record mode, we use it as follows. We only use the left eight columns, which represent 32 steps in all. The far right column is used to select which 32 steps are represented (0-31, 32-63, 64-95, 96-127). Steps are highlighted if they have been assigned in the tracker.
If you press an unhighlighted step, it is set to the values of the step (not necessarily immediately) prior to it, wrapping around. If there are previously set steps in the track, it is set to a default, such as the instrument N (where N is the track number), standard volume, and no FX. It is then highlighted.
If you press a highlighted step, it is deleted. It is then unhighlighted.
If you long-press a step, you can then press other steps and it will be copied to them.
Are there any workarounds?
Not really.

Obvious inspiration would be the Play, Play+, and the Deluge.
